Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Miss Mary Beall Walton was a popular kindergarten and primary grade teacher in the Woodstock public schools during the 1910’s and 1920’s. She never married. Her father was Morgan Lauck Walton, Sr. (1853-1935), a prominent Woodstock lawyer. Her mother was Mary Alice (March) Walton (1853-1928). She was one of seven children and grew up on North Muhlenburg Street, in a large home that came to be called “The Walton House” and later, became the National Headquarters of the Tri Sigma Sorority. Miss Walton attended Randolph and Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg where she was trained to teach kindergarten. The 1908 yearbook included her in the “Special Class” where she was a member of the Jefferson Literary Society, the Virginia Club, and the Tri Sigma Sorority. The Shenandoah Herald newspaper published a short article about her on June 25, 1920. She had been teaching kindergarten in Woodstock for eight years by then. The article highlighted her upcoming course in “Primary Work” at the State Normal School in Harrisonburg. With that added training, she was poised to take on her new position as a teacher of primary grades in the Woodstock school. Years later, in the fall of 1937, she and her older sister, Mabel Lee Walton, moved to Clermont, Lake County, Florida, where another sister, Emily (Walton) Holloway, lived with her husband and son. His parents were William Russell and Maude Margaret (Miller) Kline. Charlotte worked as a weaver in the silk mill when the couple married. They both lived in Strasburg. After Jack Kline died, Charlotte married again in 1979. Her third husband was Robert William Porsche (1912-1996), born in Massachusetts. He had lost his first wife in a fire the year before. Born in Strasburg, John was the first child of James Wesley (1892-1961) and Maudie Lee (Lake) (1901-1970) Overholtz. His father worked as a brakeman, then a flagman, for the Southern Railroad Company. John grew up on East Washington Street in Strasburg and had a younger sister, Catherine (Overholtz) Fisher (ca 1922-2018). When he registered for the WWII draft, he worked in Winchester at the O’Sullivan Rubber Plant. He was described as being 6’3” tall and 175 pounds. John served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945. He married a woman named Catherine Reedy in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, in 1942. They did not have children, and divorced in 1960. John married again to Doris Lee (Wingfield) Bowman (1919-1964) in 1962, a widow born in Lexington to William Patrick and Lottie Beatrice (Hicks) Wingfield. When John and Doris married, both lived in Strasburg, and John worked as an electrician. They moved to Waynesboro sometime after that. Doris died only a couple of years later. John moved to Wheeling, West Virginia, where he met and married his third wife, Helen Lillian Suveges (1925-1998), in 1970. He died, years later, in Wheeling. He was valedictorian at Woodstock High School. Percy Brown was born in Carmel, an unincorporated place located within Fort Valley. His parents were James William and Martha C. Brown, a farming couple. In the 1910 census, the family lived and farmed on Back Road in the Johnston District of the County. Percy was the second youngest of six siblings. His WWI Draft registration listed him as being a student at Woodstock High School. By 1930, Percy had gone to Chicago where he lodged with many others in a YMCA. He was still single and worked as a clerk. When he registered for the WWII draft in 1942, he lived in Tiffin, Seneca County, Ohio, where one “C.H. Brown” was listed as his emergency contact. At that time, Percy worked for Webster Manufacturing Company. By 1950, he had married Barbara A. Zeiter (1909-1994) and was raising a family with her in Clinton, Ohio. The census found Percy working as a pricing clerk in a metal manufacturing industry there. He and his wife had two children: Martha (who was 4 years old) and George (who was just 2 years old). Both he and his wife are buried in Tiffins, Seneca County, Ohio.
