The farm was located southwest of the Shenandoah Caverns Exit of I-81, in the Rude's Hill area. John Henry Neff purchased 470 acres of land in 1750. It was divided among his children in 1786. When the painting was done, the farm was owned by John Henry Kagey. The home was demolished in 1885. Oral history says a current brick house replaced it. The original painting is owned by L. Harold Zirkle. This house was constructed around 1825, on the site of a log cabin that had been home to Riley Moore, an original European resident of the area. The house is a Federal Style structure with interior chimneys. The building housed wounded soldiers during the Civil War when Mount Jackson was a major Confederate medical center since it was connected to the railroad. After the conflict, Samuel Moore, a local planter, bought the house. When the Manassas Gap Railroad was expanded in the 1860s, many of the Irish immigrants who came here to work on the project boarded here. In 1969, the Moore family sold the residence. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
