Middleton Subject The topic of the resource Middleton, Marvin Lewis (1920-1990) Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Marvin Lewis Middleton as a young man wearing a suit and tie. Marvin grew up on “A” Street in Strasburg, the oldest child of George L. (1894-1961) and Ada Lee (Strosnider) Middleton. His father was a barber. In 1940, he lived with his parents and two younger sisters, Mildred V. and Helen L. Middleton. When Marvin registered for the WWII draft, he lived in S.W. Washington D.C. and worked at the Navy Yard there. He was described as being 6’1” tall and 165 lbs. He married Carmella Sciacca, in 1945, while he was in the Army. She was a telegraph operator in Washington D.C. The couple married in Winchester. By 1950, Marvin and Carmella lived in N.E. Washington D.C., with their 4-year old son, George R. Middleton. Marvin was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Carmella worked as a clerk typist. In 1961, when Marvin’s father died, he and his family still lived in Washington D.C. Not long after that, the family moved back to Strasburg. On 25 November 1963, the Northern Virginia Daily newspaper reported (on page 6) that Marvin L. Middleton, “of Strasburg”, had been admitted to the hospital after a single car accident that occurred .5 miles south of Seven Fountains on Route 678. He was driving a 1955 Cadillac when he missed a curve, went over a bank, and hit a barn belonging to P.G. Coverstone. His injuries were not life-threatening. When he died more than 25 years later, he was buried in Riverview Cemetery in Strasburg. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. Born in Strasburg, she was the oldest child of Robert Fleming (1876-1944) and Hattie May (Hottel) (1882-1922) Balthis. Interestingly, her civil birth was recorded later, in 1946, when a bible from the 1870’s was produced with her birth recorded in it. Her Aunt Mary Grace Kneisley, by then in her eighties, affirmed the birth entry. Her father worked as a telegraph operator. Eleonor had two younger brothers. She grew up on Queen Street in Strasburg and lived there for much of her life. She went to Madison Teachers College where she earned a B.S. in History and Government and a Masters in Education. The 1930 census found her living in Hagerstown, Maryland, with two Kneisley women who were likely relatives. There, she worked as a “music supervisor” at a public school. The 1947 yearbook from Warren County High School included her as an instructor of Language Arts and Social Studies. Sometime after that, she accepted a faculty position at Strasburg High School, where she was a well-known teacher of music and government for many years. She never married. Frances was the daughter of Carlos Smith Keister (1888-1974) of Strasburg and Louise de Segur (Balthis) (1891-1978) Keister of Charlottesville. Her father was a well-known cattle dealer and farmer in the Strasburg area. In 1930 and 1940, the family lived on North Street in Strasburg. Frances attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg and graduated from the University of Texas at Brownsville. She married Samuel Nicholas Metcalfe, Jr. (1922-1985), of New Windsor, Maryland, in 1942. At that time, she worked as a secretary and lived in Charlottesville with her grandmother. Samuel was the son of Samuel N. and Carmen (Nichodemus) Metcalfe. He had graduated from the Staunton Military Academy and was a senior studying chemical engineering at the University of Virginia when he married. Frances and Samuel spent most of their married lives in Maryland. He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII, and after, he worked as a chemical engineer for the U.S. Government at Ft. Detrick for over 27 years before retiring in 1971. Over the years the couple had four children together: Samuel Nicholas Metcalfe III, Randolph Carlos Metcalfe, Lauve Louise Metcalfe, and Christopher Nicholas Metcalfe.
