Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Though the story is undated, its reference to troops going “over the top” in France indicates it was composed during that conflict. Most likely it was produced by a member of the Lichliter family who lived in Strasburg Virginia. During the first part of the 20th century many American were worried about a lack of patriotism among citizens. The transition to a new industrialized economy, migration of individuals to the city, the introduction of new forms of media such as magazines, and mass produced paperbacks, and the birth of new ideologies such as socialism caused many to believe the American way of life was disappearing. This concern would continue before, during, and after World War One as the world’s political climate changed dramatically. To combat this perceived decline, patriotism was introduced into the classroom. Founding tales such as George Washington and the cherry tree and Betsy Ross and the National Flag became part of the educational curriculum. This story was most likely a part of that effort and includes many of these stories. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
