Sharitz as a young man wearing a suit and tie. T.J. was from Wythe County, Virginia, but briefly worked as an agriculture teacher at Strasburg High School before World War Two. After the outbreak of the conflict, he enlisted in the US Army. He became a 1st Lieutenant with the 422 Infantry 106 Division in France during WWII. In January 1945 he was captured by the German Army and held at Stalag 13 in Bavaria. He died on April 5 1945 while a prisoner, some reports indicating he was shot while escaping. He is buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery in Lorraine, France. He received a purple heart, World War Two Victory Medal, Prisoner of War Medal, American Campaign Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation, Army Good Conduct Medal, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. Paul Rosenburg (actual Rosenberger) was a farmer living in the northwest portion of Shenandoah County near what is now St. Stephens Lutheran Church. Paul was a farmer who owned 2000 dollars in real estate and 600 in personal property when he was recorded in the 1860 census. He and his wife Catherine had four children. This assessment would have allowed Rosenberger to operate a distillery from November 1861-May 1862. At the time, distilling farm produce into alcohol was a popular and profitable enterprise for many county farmers. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. The students are: (l to r) Alfonso Smith, Clarence Green, Daniel Smith. Alfonso and Daniel Smith were brothers. Genevieve was a teacher at the segregated Creekside Elementary School in Woodstock, Virginia, (among others) and these were three of her students. Genevieve D. Robinson was born in Douglas Grove, Berkley County, West Virginia, to David Henry and Sarah E. (Banks) Robinson. The year of her birth varies depending on the document, anywhere from 1892 to 1898. She was one of nine children and her father worked in a stone quarry when she was a child. She married William McClain (1876-1931) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1922. He was the son of Henry and Georgie (Brown) McClain. Genevieve and William may have had a daughter, Genevieve, but little is known about her. In the 1930 census, they lived in Pittsburgh, PA, but William died less than two years later. It appears Genevieve moved back to West Virginia. Genevieve worked as an elementary school teacher in Franklin, W. Va., Woodstock, Va., and Stanardsville, Va. In Woodstock, she taught during the late 1940s and early 1950s at Creekside Elementary School, Woodstock's segregated school. In the 1950 census, she appeared as a boarder in the household of William and Elizabeth Jefferson near Church and Water Streets in Woodstock. She was a schoolteacher. This photograph was undoubtedly taken during her time in Shenandoah County. She was a retired teacher and lived in Ranson, West Virginia, when she died. Her obituary noted she had been a member of the Jefferson County Committee on Aging and the N.A.A.C.P. She is buried with her husband in Douglas Grove Cemetery, Berkley County, West Virginia. The brothers pictured, Alfonso and Daniel Smith, were two sons of George Marvin and Genevieve “Jeneva” (McPherson) Smith. In 1940, the two boys (then only 11 and 10 years old, respectively) lived in a household on Water Street that was headed by their 18-year old sister, Lonella. She did not work and the next oldest child, George, Jr., was only 14 years old. No parents were listed. In the 1950 census, Alfonso was a lodger on S. Main Street and worked as a Handyman in a hotel. It appears he spent his entire life in Woodstock and retired with over 30 years as a detailer at the Woodstock Garage. He had two sons, Alfonso Smith, Jr., (who pre-deceased him), and Dwight Smith; as well as a daughter, Karen (Smith) Ford of West Virginia. Daniel Smith did not stay in Woodstock. He married Shirley Delorus Munday (1936-2020), born in Atlanta, and spent much of his life with her on Staten Island, New York. They raised a family there; son David Daniel Smith (1963-2020) and a daughter. Together, the couple raised two children: Pamela Sue (Hulvey) Zemany and Daryl Lee Hulvey. Ted worked at the Naval Research and Development Center in Washington D.C. until he retired. The couple lived in Mt. Jackson in their later years. The name, "Hulvey" and the place, "Mt Jackson", are written on the glass plate.
