Original Format The type of object, such as painting, sculpture, paper, photo, and additional data Glass Negative Birth Date August 7, 1889 Birthplace Kilauea, Kauai County, Hawaii Death Date June 3, 1918 Biographical Text James was a native of Kilauea, Kauai County, Hawaii. He attended Massanutten Academy in Woodstock from 1913 until graduating 1917. He was the school's first student from the Hawaiian Islands. He joined the US Army on September 18, 1917 at Woodstock. He served as a corporal with the Headquarters Company of the 318th Infantry Regiment, but was discharged on December 26 1917 due to ill health and returned to Massanutten Academy. In June, 1918 he returned to his home on Honolulu Hawaii due to ill health and died there on June 5, 1918 of influenza. He is buried in the Nuuanu/O'ahu Cemetery in Honolulu. The Shenandoah Herald newspaper reported on July 26, 1918 that James was "quiet, unassuming, gentle, courteous" and "brave as a lion." They lamented his death and presence in their community, especially his musical talents noting he "brought the Ukulele to Woodstock." Morgan Jr. was born to Morgan Lauck (1853-1935) and Mary “Mollie” Alice (March) (1853-1928) Walton. He was the youngest of their seven children. His father was a distinguished member of the bar for more than sixty years. Morgan Jr. graduated from the University of Virginia and, by 1920, lived on Muhlenberg Street in a large home that became known as “The Walton House”. By then, he had started to practice law in Woodstock with his family’s well-known firm, Walton & Walton. He married Frances Allen (Allen) (1896-1964), at her parents’ home, Red Banks, near Mt. Jackson, in September 1920. She was the daughter of Tiphen Walsingham (1867-1938) and Lara Virginia (Ripley) (1868-1918) Allen. The Daily News Leader (Staunton, VA) described the event as “A wedding of interest throughout the state…”. In 1930, “Lauck Walton Jr.” was listed as the head of household and still lived on N. Muhlenberg Street with his wife and 8-year old daughter, Frances Allen Walton. The couple went on to have a son, Morgan Lauck Walton, III, in 1932. Morgan Jr. was born to Morgan Lauck (1853-1935) and Mary “Mollie” Alice (March) (1853-1928) Walton. He was the youngest of their seven children. His father was a distinguished member of the bar for more than sixty years. Morgan Jr. graduated from the University of Virginia and, by 1920, lived on Muhlenberg Street in a large home that became known as “The Walton House”. By then, he had started to practice law in Woodstock with his family’s well-known firm, Walton & Walton. He married Frances Allen (Allen) (1896-1964), at her parents’ home, Red Banks, near Mt. Jackson, in September 1920. She was the daughter of Tiphen Walsingham (1867-1938) and Lara Virginia (Ripley) (1868-1918) Allen. The Daily News Leader (Staunton, VA) described the event as “A wedding of interest throughout the state…”. In 1930, “Lauck Walton Jr.” was listed as the head of household and still lived on N. Muhlenberg Street with his wife and 8-year old daughter, Frances Allen Walton. The couple went on to have a son, Morgan Lauck Walton, III, in 1932. Morgan Lauck Walton, Jr. died unexpectedly only five years later. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
