Flora is wearing a flowered corsage on her dress. This picture was taken around the time of their marriage. Harold was the son of Noah Walter (1876-1948) and Elizabeth (Cox) (1877-1952) Coffman. He joined the Civilian Public Service (CPS), a program developed at the onset of WWII which provided those whose conscience forbade them to kill, the opportunity to do work of national importance under civilian direction rather than go to war. Flora was born in Maurertown, the daughter of Levi and Susie (Wakeman) Gochenour and the last surviving of their nine children. She married Harold Coffman in 1938. While he served in the CPS, Flora lived in the Valley and raised their daughter, Phyllis Mae. After his CPS service, they moved to the Washington, DC, area where they lived for thirty years. During that time, they had two more children, Janet Sue and Benjamin Walter. After they retired, they returned to the New Market area of the Shenandoah Valley where they spent much of the rest of their lives. Melvin was born near Conicville, the son of Erasmus A. (1963-1917) and Virginia Catherine (Stickley) (1896-1965) Lutz. When he registered for the WWI draft in June 1917, Melvin’s occupation was “miller” and his employer was his father. He still lived near Conicville. He married Fleta Ivis (Sheetz) (1896-1965) Lutz in 1919. In both the 1930 and 1940 censuses, the couple lived in Edinburg where Melvin worked as an insurance salesman. The couple had a daughter, Mary Ann (Lutz) Williamson. Melvin’s widowed father-in-law, Linden A. Sheetz, also lived with them. Melvin attended school at Roanoke College and was a life-long member of St. James Lutheran Church at Hudson’s Crossroads. He was also a member of the Edinburg Lions Club. John Frederick William Kitzmeyer was a Lutheran Minister who served at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Woodstock Virginia from 1905-1907. Born in Baltimore Maryland in 1868, Rev. Kitzmeyer died in Brooklyn NY in 1923. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1890 and then Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary in 1893. Kitzmeyer was married to Annie Leith, April 20 1898. Rev. Fravel wearing a suit and bow tie and standing beside a studio prop. Merville was the only son of Hubert Franklin (1884-1955) and Lucy Cleveland (Clark) (1885-1964) Fravel. He grew up in rural Woodstock on a farm. He married Flora Alice (Ryman) (1909-2004) Fravel in 1927. She was the daughter of Charles L. and Ruth Ryman. Both Merville and Flora had finished the 7th grade. The 1930 census found the family living on Kibler-town Road in the Stonewall District of Shenandoah County. Merville and Flora had a 2-year old son, Carroll. The young family lived with his parents and farmed. When he registered for the WWII draft, Merville still farmed with his father but also worked part-time at the Riverton Lime Company. Over the years, Merville and Flora had four children together: Carroll, Imogene, Thomas and Patsy Fravel. After their children had grown, the couple divorced in 1971. Merville married for the second time in 1979. His bride was Beulah Virginia (Corder) Huffman (1924-2018). When he died, his death certificate listed his occupation as a retired farmer for a private school. The name, "Fravel", is written on the glass plate of this image. She was the daughter of Edward Newton (1887-1967) and Cleva Alice (Wisman) (1884-1928) Frye. Her father was a farmer. In 1923, both Lois and her older brother, Leonard, made the honor roll for their respective grades at the Pleasant Grove Graded School in the Stonewall District of Shenandoah County. By 1930, her mother had died and she was the oldest daughter of three still living with their widowed father in the Stonewall District. An older brother, Leonard, and her grandfather, Atwell W. Frye, also lived with them. The 1940 census found Lois married to John Milton Stuckert, an egg salesman born in Washington D.C. The couple lived in Washington D.C., and had a 6-year old daughter, Lois Hester Stuckert. Ten years later, Lois lived with her daughter and a lodger on N. Taft Street in Arlington. Her husband was not there. She worked as “Asst. Chief Cashier” for the National Food Corporation. Her birth was recorded in the family bible (published in 1881). Her father had to bring the bible with him to help prove her birth to the Arlington County notary clerk when he and Lois officially recorded her arrival in 1952. She lived at The Virginian in Fairfax, Virginia, when she died. Her obituary noted she had been the cash control manager for Knott Food Concessions and the wife of John Milton Stuckert. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
