James M. Artz was born in Hardy County, West Virginia, the eldest of at least six children born to James Peter (1845-1920) and Cedena Catherine (Poland) (1857-1950) Artz. He married Lettie Irene Schaeffer in 1905. She was born in Quicksburg and her parents were John Lee (1843-1919) and Alice (Kibler) (1857-1944) Schaeffer. The 1910 census found James and Lettie raising two young children, Lois and John P. Ten years later, there were four children in the family. James farmed all his life in rural Woodstock although in the 1940 census, he also worked as a salesman in a general store. Lois F. Artz appeared as one of six children living at home in 1930. She married Odin Guy Sheetz (1892-1965) in 1933. In both the 1940 and 1950 censuses, Lois “Sheetz” was still married but living with her parents on the farm. Her husband was not listed. She stayed with her parents for many years and her obituary noted she had been an active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Woodstock throughout her life. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
