Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Born in Edinburg, he was the son of Madison J. Riddleberger, a gunsmith by trade and stagecoach driver, and Susan S. Shyrock. After the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army as a 1st Lieutenant in the 10th Virginia Infantry Company C. Later, he was a Captain of the 23rd Virginia Cavalry Company G. After the war, he became the editor and later sole proprietor of the Tenth Legion Banner, a local newspaper. During his life, he was also the editor of the Shenandoah Democrat and later, the Virginian, in Woodstock. He married Emma V. Belew. Together, the couple had at least seven children together. He studied law in the office of Henry C. Allen in Woodstock, and was admitted to the bar, practicing in Woodstock from 1871-1875. He went on to hold increasingly more prominent roles in Shenandoah County and became a U.S. Senator before he died in 1890. He was heavily involved in the 1880's Virginia debt arguments regarding the "Funders" vs. the "Re-adjusters". Fred was the son of Fred B. Sonner, Sr. (1881-1970) and Maymil Marie (Maphis) Sonner (1892-1956). He grew up on W. Washington Street in Strasburg with his siblings. In 1942, while a student at Roanoke College, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve. Two years later, Ensign Sonner was an aviator in the U.S. Navy when, tragically, he was killed in an airplane crash at the Naval Air Station in Sanford, Florida. Harold was born in Cedarville, Warren County, and grew up on a farm. He was the fifth child born to William Maury Davison and Maude Eleonor (Funk) Davison. When he registered for the WWII draft in July 1941, he had finished high school and was a school bus driver for Warren County Schools. He enlisted a year later and served until October 1945, after the war had ended. While in the military, he married Gladys A. in 1943 in Hagerstown, Maryland, but they divorced six years later. They had two children. Harold settled in the Strasburg area after his military service and eventually married Gita Rosalie Bly. Together, they had a daughter, Tara Wynne (Davison) Walter. Harold worked at Avtex Fibers near Front Royal for many years, retiring as a sheet metal engineer. When he died of a heart attack at 70 years old, he was buried in Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg. The patch on his shoulder indicates he was part of the 29th Infantry Division, nicknamed the Blue and Grey Division. Nathan Platt was born in Manhattan on May 17, 1915, to Charles and Rosa (Berliner) Platt, recent immigrants from Poland/Russia. The family was Jewish and spoke Hebrew at home. Both the 1920 and 1930 censuses recorded the family living in Paterson, New Jersey, where Nate’s parents worked as weavers in a silk mill. Nate was a teenager before he left there. By 1940, the family had been living on Massanutten Street in Strasburg for at least the previous five years. Nate was 25 years old and attending NC State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. His father was the proprietor of a silk mill in Strasburg. By then, both of Nate’s parents were naturalized citizens and owned their home. Nate enlisted in the U.S. Army in December, 1942, and was discharged three years later. After the war, he married Adele Lober and together, they had a son, Steven Irving Platt, born in 1947, who later became a lawyer in Maryland. Nate took over the ownership and management of the silk mill from his father. The silk mill employed many people in the Strasburg area during the decades it operated. The building still stands today and is the home of Strasburg’s Antiques Emporium at the intersection of Massanutten and King Streets. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Herbert grew up in Fort Valley, one of at least eight children born to Kemper Clay (1896-1938) and Zola Eugenia (Munch) Powell (1900-1978). When Herbert turned 18 and registered for the WWII draft, his father had already died. Herbert was working for Harry Dinges in the St. David’s region of Fort Valley. He served in the U.S. Army from December 1943 to April 1946 and then re-enlisted for another tour from January 1948 to January 1949. He never married, lived in Luray, and was working as a cook for the U.S. Government when he died. He is buried in the Munch Family Cemetery in Fort Valley.
