Spitler Description An account of the resource Photograph of John W. Spitler with a mustache and standing beside a bench. He was born in Liberty Furnace, the step-son of Eli Spitler and son of Elizabeth (Fadley) Spitler. He married in August 1887. His bride was Virginia “Jennie” Victoria Wiltz (some records say “Wilt” or “Willet”) (1865-1926), a daughter of Samuel and Lydia Wiltz. She was born in Stony Creek. In 1910, the census found him in the Stonewall District of Shenandoah County, with his wife and three children: Lula M. (Spitler) McClanahan Cunningham (ca 1893- ), Clarence Emmert (1901-1965) and Laura Viginia (Spitler) Neff (1902-1979). Four additional children had died. He worked for the railroad. Ten years later, in January 1920, the family lived in the Johnson District and John worked as a farmer on his own farm (that was paid off). His oldest daughter had left home by then and his son, Clarence, worked on the railroad. At some point after, he and his family moved to Oranda (near Strasburg), where they lived for many years. His wife’s obituary, published in the Strasburg News on May 20, 1926, noted that she would be missed by her many friends. The funeral took place at the Walnut Springs Church in Oranda. John died not long after this photograph was taken, in 1928. Both he and his wife are buried in Toms Brook. The name, “John W. Spitler”, is written on the glass negative of this image. His hat shows the "50 mission crush", a telltale sign of a missing stiffener. Normally, this cap had stiffeners – a support piece behind the cap device and a wire around the inside top perimeter to maintain the cap's round shape. However, since pilots wore headsets over their caps during flights, they would remove the wire stiffener to make headset wear more comfortable, causing the sides of the caps to become crushed. Eventually, the caps retained their floppy "crushed" look, giving the pilot who wore it the look of a seasoned veteran, like in this photograph. The crush cap identified its wearer as an experienced pro, and was as much a part of his identity as his leather flight jacket. Mabel was born in her family's home in Basye, Virginia, the oldest daughter of the late Boyd Ashby Fansler and Edna Blanche (Estep) Fansler. Edna was a graduate of Triplett High School in Mount Jackson, Virginia. Before marrying she worked at Shaver's Restaurant in Woodstock, Virginia from 1940 until 1942 and then at Wender's Department Store in Woodstock, Virginia from 1942 until 1944. In November 1942 she married Charles M. Fravel. He served in the Army as a Private 1st Class during WWII. In 1951 the couple moved to Arlington, Virginia where Charles worked as an undertaker. They retired to her family home in Basye in 1983. The couple had one surviving son, Charles A. Fravel, when they died. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Barbara was the daughter of Russell and Virginia (Seal) Hollar. She grew up in Shenandoah County, and later majored in History at Radford College, graduating in 1958. She met her future husband while they were both working for Deco Electronics in Cambridge, MA. They moved to Belmont, Massachusetts, where Barbara stayed for most of her adult life. She and her husband had a son, Stuart, and a daughter, Ellen. Following retirement, she and Bob traveled extensively in Europe and Asia. Barbara struggled with Parkinson's Disease in the years before her death but enjoyed the support of her community and church in Belmont throughout her last years.
