Leroy Glunt Subject The topic of the resource Glunt, Leroy Edward (1895-1963) Massanutten Military Academy (Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Va.) Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Leroy Edward Glunt, an instructor and coach at Massanutten Military Academy (MMA), in uniform. Leroy Edward Glunt was born in California, Pennsylvania, the son of James and Sara E. (Humphries) Glunt. He served as a Corporal and later, a Sergeant, in the U.S. Army during World War I. His WWI posts included Camp Humphries, Camp Travis, and Camp Lee, all of which were located in the United States. He was honorably discharged in January 1919. Leroy married Laura May Killius (1903-1988) in Brooke, West Virginia. Her parents were Andrew and Amelia (Laird) Killius. They had a son, Leroy Humphries Glunt. Leroy and his wife spent much of the rest of their lives in Woodstock where he worked at Massanutten Military Academy as a teacher, basketball coach, and adjutant while his wife also worked on the campus as a librarian and teacher. The 1946 MMA yearbook includes a photograph of him as an “Adjutant” and notes he was one of three “advisors” for the Varsity “M” Club, which promoted athletics and sportsmanship. Both he and his wife died in Woodstock and were buried in Massanutten Cemetery. She moved to Falls Church in Fairfax County, Virginia, as a young woman and worked for the telephone company, first as a switchboard operator and later, as a service assistant. She married and divorced two husbands: Bernard Crase (married 1949, divorced 1964) and Donald R. Curnutte (married 1968, divorced 1975). She did not have children. Thomas was born in Mount Jackson to Burtelle Whitmore (1917-1998) and Virginia Louise (Funkhouser) (1918-2009) Fansler. He had a brother, J. Randall, and a sister, Susie, Fansler. He graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in Quicksburg in 1963. He is pictured in the 1962 and 1963 yearbooks as having been one of the school’s bus drivers as well as a student. He later graduated from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, with undergraduate and graduate degrees in chemical engineering. While a student, he met and married Barbara Louise Rogge, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She was the daughter of Edward Sidonius (1923-1988) and Evelyn Elizabeth (Kling) (1926-2005) Rogge, Jr. They married just before Christmas in 1966 in Harrisonburg, Virginia, while both were students at Virginia Tech. They have three sons. By 1970, Thomas worked for Dupont De Nemours Company in Camden, South Carolina. He had a long career in the design and construction of facilities worldwide working for DuPont and Allied Signal/Honeywell. After, he and his wife moved to Moneta, Virginia, near Smith Mountain Lake, where Thomas entered the real estate sales business in the early 2000’s. Martha was from Strasburg, the daughter of Chester Mason (1901-1968) and Catherine Romaine (Hottle) (1913-1966) Hockman. She graduated from Strasburg High School in 1949 and then went on to the Beauty School of Woodrow Wilson in Staunton, Virginia. In 1951, she married John Fravel Rennie, who had also graduated from Strasburg High School in 1949. He grew up on B Street, the son of J.P. and Lucy M. Rennie. His father was a carpenter. The couple married in Hagerstown, Maryland, in a double ceremony with a second Strasburg couple, Peggy Crabill and Leroy Fishel. At the time of her marriage, Martha worked at the Clements Beauty Parlor in Woodstock and her husband worked for the National Fruit Company in Winchester. Martha and John had at least three daughters together: Carolyn Marie, Susan Gail, and Patricia Dianne Rennie. In January 2024, the couple celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary at their home on Junction Road, Strasburg. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
