Kay (Fadeley) Smoot was the daughter of Lloyd Richard (1895-1953) and Ada Marie (Didawick) (1893-1979) Fadeley. Like her husband, she grew up in a farming family. Her family’s farm was near Edinburg. Kay graduated from Edinburg High School in 1940. Garrett still lived with his family near Maurertown when he married in 1945. His wife, Kay, lived at 1625 16th St. in Washington, D.C. In the 1950 census, the couple lived on N. Rolfe Street in Arlington, where Garrett worked as an upholsterer in a retail shop. When their son, Larry Allen Smoot (1951-1984), was born they still lived in Arlington, Virginia. By 1957, however, when their daughter, Kathy Ann Smoot (1957-2021) was born, they had moved back to Shenandoah County. Garrett worked in a machine manufacturing plant. When Kay’s husband died unexpectedly of a heart attack in his forties, the family lived in the Narrow Passage Creek area near Edinburg. Army. Infantry Division, 29th Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Lt. Edward Gearing in his U.S. Army uniform. He was born in Woodstock in 1925, enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 28, 1942, became an officer, and was assigned to the 29th Infantry Division. This unit was part of the D-Day landing on June 6, 1944. During this action, Edward Gearing was wounded three times and did not recover until the end of the war. Gearing was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and his entire Division was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation because of his actions. Earl’s WWII draft registration card revealed he was living with his parents and farming in Quicksburg when the war started. Earl married Lelia Virginia Spitzer (1916-2002) in late July 1941 in Woodstock when he was just 21 years old. His new bride was a few years older, born in Rockingham County, and the daughter of Thomas Ira and Icey Iva (Gordon) Spitzer. She lived in Edinburg when they married. During World War II, Earl served in the U.S. Army. After, he went back to farming. The 1950 census found him living with his wife in the area of Mt. Jackson. He was buried in Zirkle Cemetery, New Market. Carroll E. Estep was the son of Thomas Estep and Laura Algier. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served in both the African and European Theatres of World War II. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star, and was a past member of the Shenandoah American Legion Post #77. He was a former employee of Avtex, Inc. of Front Royal. He married Janet Marie Kronk in August 1945, just after the war. The couple were married for over 64 years when Carroll died. Together the couple had two sons, Randy and Phil. The family lived in Strasburg for many years. Carroll and Janet (Kronk) Estep were buried in Waterlick, at the Panorama Gardens Cemetery, in Warren County. The Mount Vernon School was located at the intersection of Patmos and Fravel Roads (Routes 676 and 763) west of Woodstock Virginia. After the school closed the building was converted into a private home which still stands as of 2026. It was adjacent to Milton Fravel’s Farm. Milton’s sons were Dallas Fravel, Clarence Fravel, and Hubert Fravel who are pictured here.
