Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. He was one of the founders and held a life membership in the Virginia Christian Missionary Society; he was a charter member of the American Home Missionary Society; with Dr. Josephus Hopewood he was co-founder of Virginia Christian College (now Lynchburg College), and served a number of terms as a member of the Board of Trustees of that institution. At the time of his death, he was Director of the Pension Campaign of the Disciples of Christ for the State of Virginia. Throughout his life he had been a strong advocate of prohibition, and was a co-founder of the Anti-Saloon League of Virginia. For several years and at the time of his death he was commander of Stover Camp, United Confederate Veterans, and he loved to go to each annual encampment to mingle with the "Boys in Gray." He was an active member of Spurmont Lodge Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons and for a number of years served as Chaplain of the lodge. He was the great grandnephew of George Washington and the last Washington to own Mount Vernon. During the US Civil War, he was a Lt. Colonel in the Confederate Army. In 1840 he graduated from the University of Virginia. Three years later, he married Eleanor Love Seldon. He purchased a farm in Fauquier County, Virginia called "Waveland" where he made his home. His wife died in 1860 from childbirth. When Virginia seceded from the Union John volunteered to defend Virginia in the oncoming conflict. He served as aide-de-camp on the staff of General Robert E. Lee in the campaign of western Virginia. He was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel on this campaign. While reconnoitering in the Cheat Mountains of now West Virginia he was shot by a bushwhacker and killed. She also shared that family lore includes a story where James, only 16 years old, was wounded during the war at a spot so close to his home (near the intersection of Hoover Road and Route 11 in Woodstock Virginia), that his mother and sister heard his screams. George Alva Boyer is most remembered as a Confederate Veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted on Christmas Day, 1862 and served until May 1865. He was a member of the 35th Battalion Virginia Cavalry "White's Comanches" Company E. He served under another prominent Shenandoah County citizen, Capt. John H. Grabill. Mr. Boyer was a native of Fort Valley, and came from one of the oldest families in the area. After the war, George A. Boyer farmed for many years near Mt. Calvary before moving to Woodstock where he worked at the National Bank of Woodstock. He was a Director of the bank when he died. His wife, Mary Susan (Saum) Boyer, was the daughter of Elias and Eliza (Sweeney) Saum, of Maurertown. She and George married after the Civil War, in 1877. The couple raised at least three children: Virginia C. Boyer, George W. Boyer, and Clarence L. Boyer. When he died, the Harrisonburg Daily News Record published an obituary on October 16, 1935, that described George Alva Boyer as "one of Shenandoah County's most highly respected citizens and a man of unimpeachable character and integrity". Frye Subject The topic of the resource Frye, Atwell W. (1843-1938) Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Atwell W. Frye in his later years, holding a Confederate flag and sitting on a porch outdoors. He was a Confederate veteran of the Civil War, and served in Co. H, of the 11th Va. Calvary. His wife was Martha (Maphis) Frye (1855-1921) and they raised a son together, Edward "Ed" Newton Frye. Atwell Frye and his family lived about six mile west of Woodstock in the Fairview community. When he died, his obituary noted he had been, "one of the three surviving Confederate veterans in Shenandoah county and was one of the oldest residents of the county". Atwell Frye was also a descendant of early settlers who erected “Frye’s Fort,” a historic stone building which is still standing and in excellent condition in the northern section of Shenandoah County near the Frederick County Line. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
