(Hoffman) Coffman as a young woman. Alese was the daughter of Harry Cecil (1902-1964) and Golda E. (Ritenour) (1904-1927) Hoffman. In the 1930 census, she lived with her parents and two brothers on Kibler Town Road in the Stonewall District of Shenandoah County. Her father was a farm laborer. Ten years later, Alese was a 16-year old high school student and lived as a “ward” of Joseph C. and Dora M. Laughlin in the Johnston District. She was the first wife of Linden Bower Coffman (1923-2008). Linden was a 1941 graduate of Woodstock High School. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he received the Purple Heart. During his life, he worked as a meat cutter for Tom Eagle's Slaughterhouse, clerked in the F&G Supermarket in Woodstock, and was a partner in the Woodstock Pool Hall. He retired from the Woodstock Post Office after 25 years of service. The couple had three children during their years together: Sandra S., Ronald Franklin, and Holly. Alese was also active in the Woodstock community. Northern Virginia Daily articles in the 1956-1963 timeframe mention her involvement in groups like the Woodstock Senior Home Demonstration Club and the Ladies Auxiliary of Shenandoah County. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. From the Saumsville area, Gilbert was the only child born to Philip Ray (1895-1952) and Stella (Richman) (1897-1922) Coffman. His mother died soon after he was born. Gilbert went to live with his mother’s sister, Ida B. (Richman) Gochenour and her husband, Charles “Charley” W. Gochenour. Gilbert’s father re-married and had additional children with his second wife. In the 1930 and 1940 censuses, Gilbert lived with his aunt and uncle on Saumsville Road east of Maurertown. Both Gilbert and his uncle worked as carpenters in 1940. In February 1942, Gilbert enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He may have started out in the reserves. He served during WWII until his discharge in 1945. His gravestone notes his rank was Staff Sergeant. After the war, the 1950 census found him living in Arlington, Virginia. By then he was married to Neta M. (Racey) Coffman and they had a son, Steven, who was a year old. Gilbert worked as a reception clerk for the Red Cross. Eventually, Gilbert and his wife, Neta, moved back to Maurertown. He is buried in Sunset View Memorial Gardens in Woodstock. Flora is wearing a flowered corsage on her dress. This picture was taken around the time of their marriage. Harold was the son of Noah Walter (1876-1948) and Elizabeth (Cox) (1877-1952) Coffman. He joined the Civilian Public Service (CPS), a program developed at the onset of WWII which provided those whose conscience forbade them to kill, the opportunity to do work of national importance under civilian direction rather than go to war. Flora was born in Maurertown, the daughter of Levi and Susie (Wakeman) Gochenour and the last surviving of their nine children. She married Harold Coffman in 1938. While he served in the CPS, Flora lived in the Valley and raised their daughter, Phyllis Mae. After his CPS service, they moved to the Washington, DC, area where they lived for thirty years. During that time, they had two more children, Janet Sue and Benjamin Walter. After they retired, they returned to the New Market area of the Shenandoah Valley where they spent much of the rest of their lives.
