In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Preston was born in Mount Jackson to Washington and Nannie (Reeves) Scott. His wife was born and grew up in Woodstock, the daughter of John and Emma (Witherall) McAfee. The couple married in 1909 and raised eleven children in Woodstock. At first, Preston worked as a porter in a hotel. In subsequent records, he held a variety of other jobs, even running his own pressing shop in the 1930 census. A few years later, the Northern Virginia Newspaper published this on May 27, 1933: "Raymond L. Miller has rented the O.K. Cleaning and Pressing Establishment on Court Street and has employed Preston Scott, an experienced cleaner and presser." But Preston was mostly known for his baritone voice, his ability to bring singing groups to local events, and his successful catering services around the Woodstock area. In his later years, Preston had a leg amputated. The Northern Virginia Daily published a short note about the operation on January 9, 1962. The article began, "Preston Scott, Woodstock, probably the most highly respected colored citizen in Shenandoah County...". The eleven children of this couple were: Robert D. Preston was born in Mount Jackson to Washington and Nannie (Reeves) Scott. His wife was born and grew up in Woodstock, the daughter of John and Emma (Witherall) McAfee. The couple married in 1909 and raised eleven children in Woodstock. At first, Preston worked as a porter in a hotel. In subsequent records, he held a variety of other jobs, even running his own pressing shop in the 1930 census. A few years later, the Northern Virginia Newspaper published this on May 27, 1933: "Raymond L. Miller has rented the O.K. Cleaning and Pressing Establishment on Court Street and has employed Preston Scott, an experienced cleaner and presser." But Preston was mostly known for his baritone voice, his ability to bring singing groups to local events, and his successful catering services around the Woodstock area. In his later years, Preston had a leg amputated. The Northern Virginia Daily published a short note about the operation on January 9, 1962. The article began, "Preston Scott, Woodstock, probably the most highly respected colored citizen in Shenandoah County...". The eleven children of this couple were: Robert D. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. He married Milbert (Taper) Day (1931-2011) and had three children: a son, Franklin Scott Day, Jr., and two daughters, Dorothy and Robin. His obituary noted he had been a member of the Elks, Daniel J. Farrar Lodge No. 458 and was a Masonic member, King Hiram Lodge No. 58. Dr. Day and his wife retired to Winchester and lived there when he died. Day as a boy standing beside his mother, Odessa (Scott) Day Turner. Odessa (Scott) Turner was one of at least nine children born to Preston W. and Fleta (McAfee) Scott. In 1930, the family lived on E. High Street in Woodstock where Odessa worked as a cook in a private home. In 1935, Odessa married Justice A.W. Day in Strasburg. The groom was from Washington D.C. and a “student”. The young couple had a son together, Franklin Scott Day, soon after. By 1940, however, Odessa was back at her family’s home in Woodstock with her 4-year old son Franklin. Her marital status was listed as single and she worked as a maid in a private residence as did two of her sisters. She married Arlington G. Turner (1909-1993) in Washington D.C. in 1948. He was a widower born in West Virginia. In the 1950 census, Odessa, Arlington Turner, and Franklin Day lived together on N. Cameron Street in Winchester, Virginia. Arlington worked as a porter in a clothes shop and Odessa did housework for a private family. Both Odessa and Arlington Turner are buried together in Winchester. Lucy was born in Alonzaville to Milton Franklin (1849-1930) and Martha Alice (Richard) (1856-1943) Vetter. She married William Harrison Day (1891-1969) in July 1915 in Woodstock. Their first child was born in Hardy County, West Virginia, a couple of years later. Sometime after, the family moved to Arlington where they spent the rest of their lives. In both the 1920 and 1930 censuses, Lucy’s husband worked as a truck driver for the Carry ice cream factory. They raised their four children – Claribel, Jean, Douglas, and Howard L. -- in Arlington. By 1940, William worked as a janitor for Arlington Public Schools. When he died, his death record noted he was a painting contractor. Lucy remained in Arlington after her husband’s death. Both are buried in Columbia Gardens Cemetery, Arlington.
