Title A name given to the resource Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. Because of this, the collection is an ongoing process, with more entries being made as new information is discovered. Title A name given to the resource Burners Subject The topic of the resource Burner's Springs Resort (Fort Valley Va) Fort Valley (Va) Description An account of the resource Drawing of Burner's Springs Resort, also known as Shenandoah Springs, in Fort Valley Virginia. The resort was constructed in "bowl-like hollow" that was surrounded by seven fountains. Six were within one acre of the resort but the seventh was piped in using wooden logs. The hotel was three stories and 100ft x 40ft. There were also several detached cottages, bathhouses, and pavilions. Construction was done by local carpenters and slaves. The resort was very popular but owner, Noah Burner, suffered from financial difficulties through the 1850s. In 1859 the ownership transferred to Solomon McInturff who changed the name to the Seven Fountains Resort. It closed sometime after the end of the Civil War. This shows what is today the intersection of Fort Valley Road and Dry Run road. Visible on the left corner of the intersection is the Union Church at Dry Run, also called the Old Brick Church, which now houses the Fort Valley Museum. It was built in and operated as a church until 1949. To the rear and right of the Union Church is Trinity Church which was founded as a conservative Brethren denomination in 1904. It operated in the community until 2008 when it also became part of the Fort Valley Museum. Also identified in the front row is Raymond Ritenour (2nd from left), Ray Franklin Boyer (3rd from left) and Hazel RItenour (4th from left). While attending the High School in Toms Brook Ray Boyer boarded with the Beebles family, parents of the principal of the then recently closed Fort Valley High School and later the Rhodes School in Front Royal. Ray observed many years later how hot their wool graduation gowns were.
