Walter was born in Fort Valley to William Clarence and Lucy (Ritenour) Jett. He married Beulah Esta Huffman, also from Fort Valley, in 1923, and they had 8 children together. Walter was working for the Capola Mountain Mines in Star Tannery, Virginia, when he was severely injured by a belt that broke loose and snapped him across the legs. After he recovered, he had to walk with the aid of a cane. This was a terrible hit to this large family during the depression. The family lived in Fort Valley until at least the 1940's. When Walter died, his occupation was "retired farmer". He and his wife lived on N. Church Street in Woodstock by then. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. He is most remembered as having served as the 10th President of Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI), now called Virginia Tech, from 1947 until his retirement 15 years later, in 1962. Born a mile north of Woodstock, he was a son of WaIter Hickman (1852-1931) and Sallie Bird “Birdie” (Stephenson) (1866-1948) Newman. After completing high school in Shenandoah County, Walter graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1917. A year book from 1915 noted he played baseball and served as the Freshman class President and Sophomore Class Treasurer. He received his M.S. from VPI, and his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University. The 1920 census found him back in Woodstock living on Muhlenberg Street with his parents and two siblings. He was a teacher at the high school level in that record. Just after, Walter married Liz Otey Hoge (1895-1980) of Blacksburg, in June, 1920. She was the daughter of John Hampton and Lola Otey Hoge. The couple had one son, Walter S. Newman, Jr. In the 1930 and 1940 censuses, Walter and his family lived in Richmond. There, he held a variety of posts related to Vocation Education at the State level. He is credited with being one of the founders of Future Farmers of Virginia and was named VPI’s first vice-president in 1946. Walter was elected President of VPI in 1947, a post he held until his retirement in June 1962. By then, he was in his late sixties. He and his wife stayed in the Blacksburg, Virginia, community where Walter was elected president of the National Bank of Blacksburg in 1967, and presented with the Ruffner Medal in 1977. Born in born in Tunbridge Wells, England, on June 29, 1881, he came to the Fort Valley with a hiking group from the Washington DC area in the 1920s. Three years later, in 1923, he bought property and a house in the Fort Valley. He married Bessie Ritenour in 1924 and they lived in a white farmhouse in the northern end of Fort Valley. In the 1930's, he built four cabins on the steep hillside behind his home which he sold to people from the Washington, D.C. area for extra income during the Depression. These weekend getaways still stand today. He is buried in Dry Run. Wisman, Helen (Wisman) Logsdon, and Calvin S. Wisman, standing in back. Walter C. Wisman was a farmer in the Woodstock area of Shenandoah County. He also sold fire insurance for a time. He was the son of Josiah Wisman (1854-1925) and his first wife, Annie D. Smoot (1860-1892). His father had been well-known and respected for his work in education and as Chairman of the Shenandoah County School board. Walter’s wife, Irene, was the daughter of Daniel T. (1842-1927) and Jennie (Saum) (1842-1912) Saum. Irene lived in Woodstock when she died. James E. Wisman married Lois W. Wetzel in 1945. It was the second marriage for both of them. James worked at the American Viscose Corporation for many years and retired as a lab technician. He was living in Maurertown when he died unexpectedly as the result of an automobile accident. Helen Lucille Wisman married John Ligouri Logsdon in 1946 in Washington D.C. In the 1950 census for D.C., John worked as a bus driver and Helen was a secretary for the U.S. Air Force. Both are buried together in the Mount Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Alonzaville. Calvin S. Wisman graduated from Woodstock High School then received his college degree in agricultural education from Virginia Tech, class of 1940. In June of 1940, he volunteered for active duty in the U.S. Army and served until he retired as a Colonel in 1964. Following his Army retirement, he worked for 15 years in the civil service, mostly as a Security Manager at Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia. Calvin’s wife was Anne Elizabeth (Slater) Wisman (1916-2015). She was born in King William County, Virginia, and was widowed when she married Calvin in 1952.
