Zirkle as young children. They were the sons of Clarence Ernest and Bertie Ellen (Bowman) Zirkle, a farming couple from New Market, Virginia. Ernest William Zirkle played baseball for New Market High School and is mentioned in the 1954 yearbook. He married Sylvia Burnette in 1958 while both of them lived in Blacksburg, Virginia. Ernest married a second time more than a quarter century later, in 1984, to Cynthia “Cindy” A. Bretnall. When his brother died in 2017, Ernest was living near Bridgeton, New Jersey, and was a veterinarian. Luther Amos graduated from New Market High School in 1957 and Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1962. He worked as an extension agent for the VPI Cooperative Extension Service. In 1963, he married Carolyn Lee Peters (1941-2018) and spent much of his married life in Cumberland, Cumberland County, Virginia, where he raised a son, Ernest Bruce Zirkle, and a daughter, Amy (Zirkle) Warlitner. He moved back to New Market in 1991 to assist his parents in their final years. Unfortunately, he suffered a stroke in 1994 and was never able to return to Cumberland. Melissa was born in Hardy County, West Virginia, to Isaac Milton (1856-1950) and Mary Catherine (Sager) (1858-1935) Richman. She married Taylor Ulysses Borden (1876-1935) in October 1898 when she was just 17 years old. Taylor, a farm hand, was the son of William Henry (1852-1928) and Caroline Virginia (Hamman) (1853-1916) Borden. Together, the couple had four sons and three daughters. They lived in the Harrisville area, near Toms Brook. Tragically, Melissa’s husband went pheasant hunting one afternoon just before Christmas, 1935, and never returned. When the family raised the alarm, a search party found Taylor dead about 2 miles west of his home in the foothills of North Mountain. The County coroner determined he died of natural causes. Melissa’s mother also died in the same year. This photograph was probably taken many years later. Born in Woodstock and raised in Edinburg, she was the daughter of Cecil Ulysses and Alice Elizabeth (Coffman) Borden. Patsy was a student and a seamstress in 1961 when she married Willard William Baker, originally from Basye. He worked for Bowman’s Apple Products and was a few years older than she. Three children followed in the fifteen years they were together. They divorced in 1976. Her second husband was Ronnie Galen Lytton and their marriage lasted about ten years. Patsy married again, in 1989, to Connie Carl Wetzel, Jr., the son of Connie Carl and Zula Virginia (Polk) Wetzel from Edinburg. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
