Virginia was the daughter of George Rolle Rhinehart (1874-1945) and Alberta “Bertie” Mae (Carrier) Rhinehart. She married Lewis Henry Rutz (1911-1991) in 1937 in Harrisville. At that time, he was a “meat clerk” in Washington D.C., and living on T Street, N.E. A couple of years later, the 1940 census found the couple living in Washington D.C. and working. Lewis was a meter reader for a public utility while Virginia worked as a cashier in a department store. Their first son, Gordon R. Rutz, was born in Washington. At some point, the growing family moved back to Shenandoah County and by 1950, they lived in the Stonewall District where Lewis worked in a grocery store. Virginia’s mother, Bertie, also lived with them for a time. By then, they had two additional children, Linda Joan and Gary. An additional daughter, Carole Jean, was born later. This image was one of two produced for Landon Dirting's Federal Prohibition Agent identification card which was dated August 8, 1921. John Landon Dirting was the son of Perry William (1871-1947) and Cora Alice (Barton) (1870-1928) Dirting, of Edinburg. He was working as a “Baggageman” for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company out of Pittsburgh when he registered for the WWI draft in May 1917. He served in France during WWI, as a Private with Company C of the 323rd Infantry. He entered the Army as a truck driver but became a signalman during his service. After the war, he returned to Shenandoah County and lived with his parents. The 1920 census found him teaching in a public school. When this photograph was taken on July 14, 1918, he was about to become a Federal Prohibition Agent working for the IRS. He stayed with that career until he retired. He married Irene E. Ashenfelter (1895-1981) in June 1948, when he was in his fifties. By then, he had retired from Federal service and was farming. Irene was the daughter of George David and Metta Oris (Hite) Ashenfelter. She, too, was in her fifties when she married. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Lloyd was born in Columbia Furnace, oldest son of Thomas Jefferson and Mary (Irwin) Miller. Lloyd had many siblings, mostly brothers. They grew up on a farm in Fisher’s Hill near Strasburg. In the 1910 census, Lloyd worked as a teacher in a public school. The rest of his brothers were still farming. When he registered for the WWI draft in September 1918, he was 36 years old and lived on Indiana Avenue in Washington D.C. There, he worked as a clerk for the Federal Government. Lloyd never married and eventually returned to live on Stover Avenue in Strasburg, where he served as the Assistant Postmaster until he retired.
