King Streets in Strasburg, Virginia. Two unidentified people, a woman and a man, are standing in front of the restaurant. The left side of the building was the site of a car wash business. The building was constructed in 1927 by B.F. Ritenour, who wanted a structure fronting on Massanutten Street and built of tile with a brick veneer. Initially, the lower floor was a car storage business and the second floor was the town's first public hall, where various organizations or individuals could hold banquets, dances or similar public gatherings. Between 1927 and 1929, the Northern Virginia Daily published notices of square dances, basketball games, and roller skating to be held at the "New Ritenour Hall". By 1929, his son, Irvin Leon Ritenour, was operating the Massanutten Restaurant on part of the first floor of the building. He sold the restaurant to Harold E. McKee, who had been employed by the New York Restaurant in Woodstock. Harold and his family moved from Woodstock to Strasburg and operated the Massanutten Restaurant for many years. We are unsure when the restaurant closed. However, on 6 January 1948, the Northern Virginia newspaper published a short notice saying, "The loyal Order of the Moose No. 403, of Strasburg, will hold their first meeting tonight at 8 pm in their new home, which was formerly the Massanutten Restaurant." The building still stands today. Title A name given to the resource Old Mill Tavern and View Looking South Subject The topic of the resource Strasburg (Va) United States Highway 11 Roads - Virginia - Strasburg Restaurants - Virgina - Strasburg Description An account of the resource Photograph taken in the overgrown parking lot of the Old Mill Tavern (located in the historic Spengler's Mill) on the southern edge of Strasburg and looking southwards down Route 11. The building is still there today. The water-powered mill was built between 1797 and 1804, by the Spengler family, and was located close to the confluence of Cedar Spring Run and the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. It was a working flour mill for many years. During the 1920's and 1930's, it was operated by the Artz family and known as the Artz Mill. It was converted into a well-known restaurant called "The Old Mill Tavern Restaurant" by the George Pappas family in 1938. The Old Mill was the place to go for dining, dancing and community celebrations under a number of different managers for nearly seventy years. The Old Mill property was purchased by the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #4186, in 2017. Initially, the property included 4 acres and bordered the river behind it. The owner, Mr. Wyatt, auctioned the bathing beach, equipment and the 4 acres on July 29, 1939, leaving him with the Recreation Hall only. Several advertisements from 1939 and 1940 in the Northern Virginia newspaper advertise that square dances were held every Wednesday and Saturday night at the hall. One ad from 1940 noted the admission was 40 cents per couple. The 1938 and 1939 Northern Virginia Checkers Tournament was held at Wyatt's Recreation Hall as well. The building still stands today and has been converted into apartments. The tavern was located in what is known as Spengler's Mill. It was located on the southern edge of Strasburg on Route 11 (or Stover Avenue as that stretch is named). The building is still there today. The water-powered mill was built between 1797 and 1804, by the Spengler family, and was located close to the confluence of Cedar Spring Run and the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. It was a working flour mill for many years. During the 1920's and 1930's, it was operated by the Artz family and known as the Artz Mill. It was converted into a well-known restaurant called "The Old Mill Tavern Restaurant" by the George Pappas family in 1938. The Old Mill was the place to go for dining, dancing and community celebrations under a number of different managers for nearly seventy years. The Old Mill property was purchased by the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #4186, in 2017. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Transcribed, the plaque reads: This building of native limestone, erected in 1791, is the oldest courthouse now in use west of the Blue Ridge. A few rods southeast from here stood the church in which Peter Muhlenberg preached his martial sermon and made his famous call to arms in 1776.
