Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. After comparing this form to others, we believe this was part of George Edward Morrison, III's, U.S. Navy Separation packet. Morrison entered Naval service on February 12, 1944. He served in Bainbridge, Maryland, Norfolk Virginia, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. He also served aboard ships. Medals listed were: Pacific Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and the Victory Medal. The name, J.L. George was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on January 31, 1927. He was working for Charles H. Tomkins in Washington D.C. as a carpenter when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February 1944. Going forward, his preference was to return to his home in Pugh's Run near Woodstock, finish high school, and obtain additional carpentry training. He served in Sampson and Brooklyn New York, and in Portland Oregon. He also served aboard the SS Lyman Abbott and the SS Jones Monroe. William was born in Alexandria, Virginia, on March 1, 1926. He was working in the spinning room at the American Viscose Plant in Front Royal when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in September 1943. At the end of his naval service, he was married and lived at 200 Sharpe Street in Strasburg where he hoped to return to his job at American Viscose.
