The shoulder patch on his uniform indicates he was part of the Glider Infantry during WWII. Byron was the youngest of seven children born to Glenn William Rudy (1876-1927) and his second wife, Betty Catherine (Heltzel) Rudy (1884-1964). His father died when Byron was only three years old. In the 1930 census, his mother was widowed and lived on Muhlenberg Street in Woodstock with all her children. When he registered for the WWII draft in June 1942, Byron lived in Baltimore and worked for the Glenn L. Martin Company in Middle River, Maryland. His mother was his emergency contact and the card described him as being 5’11” tall and 165 pounds. He married a little over a year later to Anna Rose (King) (1926- ). She was born in South Bend, Indiana, to Archie Russel and Pearl (Mauck) King. When they married, Anna’s family lived in Woodstock and Byron worked as a truck driver there. Byron enlisted in the U.S. Army soon after he married. He served from November 1943 to July 1945. He was wounded by artillery shell fragments in February 1945, and spent time recovering in a convalescent hospital before being discharged. The couple had three children together over the years: Diane Marie, Dennis King, and Donna Sue Rudy. After the war, the family lived for many years in Front Royal where Byron worked as a mechanic for a rayon manufacturer (later known as Avtex Fibers). Byron and Anna’s marriage ended when they divorced in 1987. Irvin was born in Maryland, the son of Thomas Fletcher and Olive (Carrier) Golliday. He served in the Merchant Marines and later made his living as a bricklayer. He moved to Woodstock as a boy. In 1930, he and his three brothers lived with their widowed mother, “Ollie B.” on South Main Street. Ten years later, he was still single and living with his mother on Muhlenberg Street. He worked as a bricklayer. In the 1940’s, he married Ethel Lorraine (Barrow) Golliday and they spent their years together in Woodstock. They had a son, Donald I. Golliday. The original materials are primarily 8x10 black and white prints with approximately 2 5x7 prints and 110 images are from negatives. They were taken and developed by William Garber. The items were scanned and stored in a thumb drive in jpg format. Photographs are numbered chronologically according to how they appeared in the Mt. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Title A name given to the resource George William Smith Collection Subject The topic of the resource Smith, George William (1900-2000) Woodstock (Va) Description An account of the resource Digitized photographs from the collection of George William Smith of Woodstock Virginia. George William Smith (1900-2000) was an African American citizen of the town of Woodstock who was noted for his collections, including many items rescued from the trash. He lived on Water Street and attended Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Woodstock. Smith is buried at the Riverview Cemetery in Woodstock. Two hundred and seventy nine of the rescued photographs that are part of this collection were taken and/or processed by Woodstock photographer Hugh Morrison. An amateur photographer, George Smith took hundreds of photographs of the town during the 1980s and early 1990s for his amusement. These images are available at the Shenandoah County Library but have not yet been digitized.
