Miss Mary Beall Walton was a popular kindergarten and primary grade teacher in the Woodstock public schools during the 1910’s and 1920’s. She never married. Her father was Morgan Lauck Walton, Sr. (1853-1935), a prominent Woodstock lawyer. Her mother was Mary Alice (March) Walton (1853-1928). She was one of seven children and grew up on North Muhlenburg Street, in a large home that came to be called “The Walton House” and later, became the National Headquarters of the Tri Sigma Sorority. Miss Walton attended Randolph and Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg where she was trained to teach kindergarten. The 1908 yearbook included her in the “Special Class” where she was a member of the Jefferson Literary Society, the Virginia Club, and the Tri Sigma Sorority. The Shenandoah Herald newspaper published a short article about her on June 25, 1920. She had been teaching kindergarten in Woodstock for eight years by then. The article highlighted her upcoming course in “Primary Work” at the State Normal School in Harrisonburg. With that added training, she was poised to take on her new position as a teacher of the primary grades in the Woodstock school. Years later, in the fall of 1937, she and her older sister, Mabel Lee Walton, moved to Clermont, Lake County, Florida, where another sister, Emily (Walton) Holloway, lived with her husband and son. Stanley Alden Richman was the son of Isaac M. and Mary Catherine (Sager) Richman, a farming couple. The 1920 census found Stanley living and working on his family's farm in the Stonewall District of the County. He married in 1923. At that time, his occupation was farmer. Clara Irene Gochenour was the daughter of Calvin and Alice (Windle) Gochenour. She had many siblings growing up. The 1930 census found the family living on Back Road near St. Luke. Clara and Stanley raised at least three children over the next several decades. They were Alden G., Blanche M., and Margetta (or Mary Etta). The 1950 census found the couple living in the Davis District where Stanley worked as a pipefitter for the American Viscose Corporation and Clara helped with farm work. They had a 14-year old daughter, Mary Etta, living with them. Stanley died as the result of an accident when he was in his seventies. His pants caught fire while he was burning tree stumps at his home in Strasburg. Second and third-degree burns affected 47% of his body and led to septicemia and pneumonia. He did not recover. Clara lived a long life. Her last residence was on Junction Road in Strasburg before moving to the Lantzers Home for Adults in Middletown, where she died. Both Stanley and Clara are buried together in Mount Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Alonzaville, near Maurertown. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Linden was the son of William Dallas Fravel (1888-1962), of Woodstock, and Olive Catherine (Stultz) Fravel (1889-1987). Linden had finished 2 years of college when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943. He became an aviation cadet and completed primary and basic pilot training before becoming an aerial gunner in B-24 Liberators. Linden served in the 15th Air Force, 459th Bomb Group, 756th Bomb Squadron in Italy during his WWII service. After the war, he married Mary Jane (Haislip) Fravel (1924-2018) in 1948. She was born in Salem, Virginia, and worked as a secretary for Lewis-Gale Hospital there when they married. Her parents were Walter Armstrong and Mary Leone (Johnston) Haislip. The couple lived in the Stephens City area of Frederick County for much of their married lives. Linden operated "Fravel's Plant and Fish Garden" as a nurseryman in his later years.
