Together, they had three children: Carl Washington, Jr., Thomas “Tom” R. and Helen L. Fleming. Tragically, Carl died as the result of a farm accident. He got caught in a pulley and was run over by a tractor. It severed his spinal cord and broke bones. His wife survived him by more than three decades. They are buried together in Mount Jackson. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Linaweaver on the right. Carl was in the U.S. Navy while Robert was a paratrooper in the Airborne division of the U.S. Army. Their parents were Lawrence and Essie (Brill) Linaweaver. They also had a sister named Louise (Linaweaver) Raynor Seekford. When he registered for the WWII draft, Carl worked at the Safeway Store in Front Royal but lived on Spring Street in Woodstock. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserves from December 1944 to July 1946. Sometime later, he married Lavine Estelle (Gulick) (1919-1982), a woman from West Virginia, who worked as a waitress in a restaurant. Robert served in the Airborne Division of the U.S. Army from May 1943 to Dec 1945. After, he married Emily Isabel (Hollar) (1924-2017) in 1946. She was a nurse and the daughter of Lester Granville and Mazie Irene (Lambert) Hollar. When they married, Robert was a 21-year old service station operator in Edinburg. The couple had five children: Robert Jr., Sue, Rebecca, William, and Richard “Dicky”. Cadets - Virginia - Woodstock Witham, Carleton Lee (1909-1968) Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Massanutten Academy cadet Carleton Witham. Carleton was originally from Michigan, one of many children born to Albert J. and Annie G. (Hart) Witham. His father farmed and, in 1920, was listed as a Minister. This image and his other MMA photographs appear to have been taken in 1926, the same year his sister and brother-in-law worked as teachers at MMA. Carleton’s senior class photo appears in the 1927 yearbook for Ann Arbor High School and indicates, perhaps, he spent only his junior year in Woodstock. However, it is uncertain. He graduated from the University of Michigan and worked in a few businesses there before joining his sister, Alice, and brother-in-law, Roland R. Robertson, at the Peekskill Military Academy in Peekskill, New York, where they worked. When he registered for the WWII draft in 1940, Carleton lived with them in Peekskill and worked at the nearby Hollowbrook Country Club. In 1946, Carleton joined his brother-in-law in his effort to found a new school, Eastern Military Academy, in Stamford, Connecticut. The school was established on the belief that the right kind of military training – no plebe system – was a distinct advantage to a young man desiring to pursue a college education. For the next 22 years, until he died, Carleton served as Assistant Superintendent, then Superintendent, and, briefly, the President of the Board of Trustees of the school. He is credited with establishing a college testing center and advisory center on campus. Their services were offered to the school’s students and also to the general community at no cost. Carleton was originally from Michigan, one of many children born to Albert J. and Annie G. (Hart) Witham. His father farmed and, in 1920, was listed as a Minister. This image and his other MMA photographs appear to have been taken in 1926, the same year his sister and brother-in-law worked as teachers at MMA. Carleton’s senior class photo appears in the 1927 yearbook for Ann Arbor High School and indicates, perhaps, he spent only his junior year in Woodstock. However, it is uncertain. He graduated from the University of Michigan and worked in a few businesses there before joining his sister, Alice, and brother-in-law, Roland R. Robertson, at the Peekskill Military Academy in Peekskill, New York, where they worked. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed.
