Day as a boy standing beside his mother, Odessa (Scott) Day Turner. Odessa (Scott) Turner was one of at least nine children born to Preston W. and Fleta (McAfee) Scott. In 1930, the family lived on E. High Street in Woodstock where Odessa worked as a cook in a private home. In 1935, Odessa married Justice A.W. Day in Strasburg. The groom was from Washington D.C. and a “student”. The young couple had a son together, Franklin Scott Day, soon after. By 1940, however, Odessa was back at her family’s home in Woodstock with her 4-year old son Franklin. Her marital status was listed as single and she worked as a maid in a private residence as did two of her sisters. She married Arlington G. Turner (1909-1993) in Washington D.C. in 1948. He was a widower born in West Virginia. In the 1950 census, Odessa, Arlington Turner, and Franklin Day lived together on N. Cameron Street in Winchester, Virginia. Arlington worked as a porter in a clothes shop and Odessa did housework for a private family. Both Odessa and Arlington Turner are buried together in Winchester. Franklin Scott Day grew up to become a Pathologist and Histologist at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland. He married Milbert (Taper) Day (1931-2011) and had three children: a son, Franklin Scott Day, Jr., and two daughters, Dorothy and Robin. His obituary noted he had been a member of the Elks, Daniel J. Farrar Lodge No. 458 and was a Masonic member, King Hiram Lodge No. 58. Dr. Day and his wife retired to Winchester and lived there when he died. Edwin was the son of William (1859-1954) and Mary Ella (Brill) (1866-1908) Tamkin. Marybell was the daughter of William Franklin and Ida (Munch) Ritenour. Both families were from Fort Valley. They married in May 1918 and started their marriage in Hagerstown, Maryland. The 1920 census found them living on Ridge Avenue there with their 5-month old daughter, Fleta M. Edwin was working in a table manufacturing shop. By 1927, they had moved back to Fort Valley and lived in a pre-Civil War era farmhouse with many outbuildings. There, they farmed and raised six children for more than 35 years. In the early hours of July 3rd, 1965, a tragic fire destroyed their home and took both of their lives. Perry Garnett Coverstone was still single when he registered for the WWI draft. His emergency contact was listed as “Mrs. D.F. Frederick, Postmaster, Waterlick”. At that time, he worked and lived on his family’s farm in Fort Valley. Garnett was a son of John Edward and Ida Susan (Ritenour) Coverstone. He married for the first time in 1922. His bride was Mary Margaret Burke (1899-1938), the daughter of Robert and Lydia (Cullers) Burke. The couple had a daughter together before she died. In the 1940 census, Garnett was widowed and lived with his 11-year old daughter, Maria, and a housekeeper, on his farm in Fort Valley. Two years later, he married Alva Virginia Shiley (1920-1998) from Frederick County. She was the daughter of James Samuel and Attie Gertrude (Newcome) Shiley. Garnett farmed all his life and is buried in Boyer Cemetery in Fort Valley. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
