After further research, we determined this is a photograph of Robert H. Jewell’s wife, Emma Alice (Brinker) Jewell, with her two oldest children: William H. and Catherine L. Jewell. Another son, George S., was born after this photograph was taken. Emma A. Brinker was the daughter of Henry and Lizzie (Craig) Brinker. She married Robert H. Jewell (1898-1943) in May 1918, in Strasburg. He was the son of Solomon Robert (1864-1938) and Sarah Catherine (Middleton) (1864-1940) Jewell, of Fishers Hill, near Strasburg. The well-known Reverend, J.D. Hamaker, officiated. When they married, her husband’s occupation was “Miller”. Later that year, Robert registered for the WWI draft. The couple lived on Fishers Hill, and Robert worked for Levi Keller there. Over the next decades, the family rented farms around the area and Robert worked as a farmhand. In 1920, they were on Back Road, in 1930 they lived near Posey Hollow Road and Valley Pike in the Davis District, and by 1940, they lived in Toms Brook. In 1936, their oldest son, William Henry, died as the result of an automobile accident. He was not quite 18 years old. On October 23, 1943, Emma’s husband was struck and killed by an automobile as he walked along US Route 11 near Fisher’s Hill in the early evening. Emma, herself, died not quite two weeks later. Her death certificate noted the cause of death as “Acute dilation of the heart”. The name, "Mrs. Robt Jewell", is written on the glass plate negative of this image. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. When this photograph was taken, these were the youngest three (of seven) children of William Lorenza Sr. (1880-1960) and Martha Louise (Jordan) (1903-1964) Click. Their father farmed. Margarette left home and worked as a sales clerk in a Washington D.C. department store. In 1950, she married Glen Clifton Shelton (1927-1985), an army man stationed at Ft. Belvoir. The couple’s son, Glen William Shelton, was born in 1952, in California. Eventually, the family moved back to Shenandoah County where they owned and operated a bowling alley at the time of Glen C.’s death. Barbara Ruth still lived with her family in the 1950 census. Five years later, she married Edwin Leroy Litten (1932-2000). He had served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean conflict. The couple raised their family and lived in Quicksburg. Allen Eugene served 23 years in the U.S. Air Force. During that time, he had assignments in Japan and Spain. In 1955, he married Cuba Spiggle and they spent 66 years together before he died. They had 3 children, Ricky, Terry, and Lynn. After his military service, he managed the Massanutten Lanes bowling center; attended Lord Fairfax Community College and earned an associate's degree; then worked for Ohio Medical as a technician on anesthesia equipment. Fred was from Woodstock, the son of Eugene and Margaret (Hoffman) Ramey. In 1930, the family lived on E. Foundry Street in Woodstock and Fred’s father was a truck driver. Fred died, tragically, from an accidental drowning when he was only 16 years old. The Northern Virginia Daily published an account of the incident on the front page of its June 24, 1941, edition. It said that Fred “drowned early yesterday evening in the Shenandoah River near Narrow Passage about two miles south of town. . . The youth had gone for an outing with a group of local boy scouts and, unable to swim, apparently walked off a ledge on the river bottom stepping into a deep hole. Only several scouts were in the water when they heard the victim call for help, but others and Scout Master George L. Sheets, who was fishing from the bank, immediately plunged in and tried to rescue the boy who did not return to the surface after disappearing.“ The boy’s body was found within a few feet from where it had disappeared. Fred was a member of the freshman class of the Woodstock High School at the time of his death. He had an older brother and two older sisters when he died. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
