Taken by Mt. Jackson photographer Hoyle Garber, the photograph was most likely used to market the service station when it opened in the late 1940s. Pictured are two unidentified station attendants and Dr. George Parrot of New Market with his automobile. This station was located at the intersection of Routes 11 and 211, two of the region's major highways. Before the introduction of the Interstate Highway System, this area would have been filled with cars travelling to Luray Caverns, Washington DC, and many other points. A gas station here would have certainly been a profitable business. Based on the photograph, the New Market gulf was a full service business that offered car washes, maintenance, parts, and of course, gasoline. The original station design reflects the clean, sleek, art deco design popular in the period. Today, this site continues to serve the community as a gas station, though its name has changed to Liberty and the building is remarkably different. Jackson (Va) Description An account of the resource This aerial photograph of the Town of Mt. Jackson Virginia shows a community much different than the one we know today. The most prominent difference is the layout of the town. While the downtown district may look the same, the areas beyond that have changed drastically. Many of the smaller homes and farm fields that are seen here have been replaced by subdivisions needed to house a larger population. The large commercial establishments on the north end of town and the growth in that direction are also absent as Interstate 81 had not yet been built. Transportation arteries have also been altered. Orkney Drive, pictured in the foreground, was once the main road between Mt. Jackson and Orkney Springs. It has since been relegated to a side street since being replaced by Orkney Grade which enters on the south end of town. The rail line, which has been mostly abandoned, was still in use as shown by the presence of railcars in the center of the picture. Many of the buildings that are pictured here have also changed use, been altered, or demolished. • The Triplett School, which once housed the community’s High, Elementary, Middle, and Vocational Schools, sits on the south end of town. Its north wing was demolished for the town’s fire department which moved from its original quarters shown on the north end of town. The building has been vacant since the company moved further south in 2016. • Additions have been completed at both the Lutheran Church and Methodist Churches, pictured prominently in the foreground. • The Nelson Theatre, in the center of town, has been closed and the building now houses other commercial establishments. • The farm bureau building, in the foreground, and the Triplett and Verhencamp Building, on the north end of Main Street were centers of the area’s farming community when the picture was taken. The farm bureau building now houses a flea market and the Verhencamp Building has been demolished. • The Triplett Building, which housed People’s National Bank and has since been demolished for a parking lot, sits prominently on the north end of Main Street. Starting in the early 20th century they became popular forms of communication. Over the next few decades the became primarily associated with tourism as visitors regularly used them to highlight places they had visited. This particular card was an advertisement for the Chicken in the Rough Restaurant which specialized in fried chicken, shoestring potatoes, rolls, and honey. It was located just north of New Market. Though they were cheaply produced and often damaged after being sent long distances, many people collected them because they included pictures and bright images. Today postcards no longer attract the same amount of attention they once did. However, historic postcards give us the ability to learn about communities by highlighting what places people liked to visit and what sites local communities valued and hoped to promote. Title A name given to the resource George William Smith Collection Subject The topic of the resource Smith, George William (1900-2000) Woodstock (Va) Description An account of the resource Digitized photographs from the collection of George William Smith of Woodstock Virginia. George William Smith (1900-2000) was an African American citizen of the town of Woodstock who was noted for his collections, including many items rescued from the trash. He lived on Water Street and attended Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Woodstock. Smith is buried at the Riverview Cemetery in Woodstock. Two hundred and seventy nine of the rescued photographs that are part of this collection were taken and/or processed by Woodstock photographer Hugh Morrison. An amateur photographer, George Smith took hundreds of photographs of the town during the 1980s and early 1990s for his amusement. These images are available at the Shenandoah County Library but have not yet been digitized.
