Frye Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Atwell W. Frye in his later years, holding a Confederate flag and sitting on a porch outdoors. He was a Confederate veteran of the Civil War, and served in Co. H, of the 11th Va. Calvary. His wife was Martha (Maphis) Frye (1855-1921) and they raised a son together, Edward "Ed" Newton Frye. Atwell Frye and his family lived about six mile west of Woodstock in the Fairview community. When he died, his obituary noted he had been, "one of the three surviving Confederate veterans in Shenandoah county and was one of the oldest residents of the county". Atwell Frye was also a descendant of early settlers who erected “Frye’s Fort,” a historic stone building which is still standing and in excellent condition in the northern section of Shenandoah County near the Frederick County Line. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Junior Pangle Subject The topic of the resource Pangle, Roy Arthur "Junior" (1927-2017) Marines (Military personnel) - United States - Virginia - Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of a young "Junior" Pangle in his U.S. Marine Corps uniform. Roy Arthur "Junior" Pangle was born on Capon Road in Strasburg to James Arthur and Zelda Belle (Beeler) Pangle. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944 and served with the 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Battalion as a rifle marksman. His group served in Guam and North China. He attained the rank of Corporal. After his discharge in 1947, Junior Pangle returned to Strasburg and married Margaret Ann (Rennie) Pangle. The couple raised two sons and three daughters together over many decades they were together. Junior Pangle worked as a union carpenter for almost 40 years, retiring in 1989. He continued as a wood craftsman up until his death. Mr. Pangle was known in later years for selling eggs and driving his blue Chevy truck with his cane hanging on the side. His obituary noted, "He was a true landmark in the Strasburg community for over 90 years and will be missed dearly." Students - Virginia - Woodstock Description An account of the resource Photograph of Rosalie Benchoff as a student at Massanutten Military Academy (MMA) in Woodstock. Rosalie was born in Virginia, the daughter of Howard Johnston and Kathryn (Mahon) Benchoff, originally from Pennsylvania. In the 1920 census for Woodstock, she and her family lived on Muhlenberg Street. Her father was the Superintendent of Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock for many years while she was growing up. She graduated from Goucher College in Towson, Maryland. When Rosalie married in 1930, a long article published in the Daily News Leader (Staunton) on July 27th called the event, “A wedding of great interest throughout the state…”. The article went on to note that the groom, Dr. William Baker Noel (1904-1971), was from Farmville. The couple had met in Baltimore when Rosalie attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music and Dr. Noel was at Johns Hopkins Medical school (class of 1929). The large wedding took place in the Massanutten Military Academy’s chapel and the reception was held on the lawn outside. The couple went to the Great Lakes and Canada for their honeymoon before settling in Detroit, Michigan, where Rosalie’s new husband started a job on the staff of the Henry Ford Hospital there. Twenty years later, the 1950 census found the family living in Henderson, North Carolina, where Dr. Noel was still a practicing surgeon and Rosalie was caring for her two sons, Robert F. and Richard J. Noel. Another son arrived later. Rosalie stayed in North Carolina for the rest of her life. Both she and her husband are buried together in Elmwood Cemetery in Henderson, N.C.
