(1890-1949) and Nettie Carey (Funkhouser) (1881-1945) Fravel. In 1940, Charles worked as an assistant to the mortician, V.L. Dellinger, in Woodstock. When he registered for the WWII draft, he was still there. He was described as being 6 ft. tall and 140 pounds. He enlisted after high school and served in the U.S. Army as a Private 1st Class from April 1942 to August 1945. In November 1942, while in the Army, he married Mabel Virginia Fansler (1921-2012), in Woodstock. Mabel was from Orkney Springs, the oldest daughter of Boyd Ashby and Edna Blanche (Estep) Fansler. She was a graduate of Triplett High School in Mount Jackson, Virginia. Before marrying, she worked at Shaver's Restaurant in Woodstock, from 1940 until 1942 and then at Wender's Department Store from 1942 until 1944. The 1950 census found Charles and Mabel living in Nashville, Tennessee. They had a 6-year old son, Charles, with them. Their daughter, Deborah Cay Fravel, was born five years later. In 1951, the family moved to Arlington, Virginia, where Charles worked as the funeral director at Murphy's Funeral Home. They retired to Basye in 1983. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. At that time, Charles worked for the Town of Woodstock (in the Public Works Department). Over the years they raised three children: Melissa Jane, Michael Charles, and Allen Samuel Gochenour. At the time of his death, Charles' obituary noted he was a graduate of Central High School and a trustee of St. John's United Church of Christ in Hamburg. He also maintained Mahogany Grove Farm, operated his own auctioneer business, and served as President of the Shenandoah County Fair for many years. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Military academies - Virginia - Woodstock Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Charles Thomas Lutz, a long time employee of Massanutten Military Academy (MMA) in Woodstock, Virginia. This photograph appeared in the 1927 Massanutten Academy yearbook titled, “The Adjutant”. He was the Chief Engineer at Massanutten Military Academy for thirty years, retiring in 1945 due to health issues. Born near Mt. Jackson, Charles was a son of James and Mary (Miller) Lutz. His wife was Anna “Annie” Barbara (Barb) Lutz (1875-1949). They married in 1892. He lived in Woodstock for 35 years before he died. When his obituary was published in the Northern Virginia Daily on 13 December 1948, the article noted that Charles Thomas Lutz was known to his wide circle of friends as “Pappy Lutz”.
