Born in Edinburg, he was the son of Madison J. Riddleberger, a gunsmith by trade and stagecoach driver, and Susan S. Shyrock. After the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army as a 1st Lieutenant in the 10th Virginia Infantry Company C. Later, he was a Captain of the 23rd Virginia Cavalry Company G. After the war, he became the editor and later sole proprietor of the Tenth Legion Banner, a local newspaper. During his life, he was also the editor of the Shenandoah Democrat and later, the Virginian, in Woodstock. He married Emma V. Belew. Together, the couple had at least seven children together. He studied law in the office of Henry C. Allen in Woodstock, and was admitted to the bar, practicing in Woodstock from 1871-1875. He went on to hold increasingly more prominent roles in Shenandoah County and became a U.S. Senator before he died in 1890. He was heavily involved in the 1880's Virginia debt arguments regarding the "Funders" vs. the "Re-adjusters". A note is written at the bottom of the original image that says, "Your brother, H.H. Riddleberger". Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
