Fred was from Woodstock, the son of Eugene and Margaret (Hoffman) Ramey. In 1930, the family lived on E. Foundry Street in Woodstock and Fred’s father was a truck driver. Fred died, tragically, from an accidental drowning when he was only 16 years old. The Northern Virginia Daily published an account of the incident on the front page of its June 24, 1941, edition. It said that Fred “drowned early yesterday evening in the Shenandoah River near Narrow Passage about two miles south of town. . . The youth had gone for an outing with a group of local boy scouts and, unable to swim, apparently walked off a ledge on the river bottom stepping into a deep hole. Only several scouts were in the water when they heard the victim call for help, but others and Scout Master George L. Sheets, who was fishing from the bank, immediately plunged in and tried to rescue the boy who did not return to the surface after disappearing.“ The boy’s body was found within a few feet from where it had disappeared. Fred was a member of the freshman class of the Woodstock High School at the time of his death. He had an older brother and two older sisters when he died. Hattie R. (Miller) Foltz was the daughter of Milton and Rebecca Miller, from Jerome. She completed the 7th grade and married Kirby in April 1924, in Orkney Springs. Kirby Lee Foltz was also from Jerome, the son of Thomas Franklin Foltz (1876-1966) and Elizabeth (Bowers) Foltz (1874-1954). He had many siblings growing up. The couple farmed for many years and had no children. When Kirby registered for the WWII draft in 1942, he was over 40 years old and reported he had no phone. He was described as being 5’11” tall and 155 pounds. By 1950, Kirby had taken a job as a laborer with the State Highway Department. Years later, when he retired, he was a foreman. Carson was born in New Market and grew up in Edinburg, where he helped his parents, Isaac Dereilus and Eleonora C. Golliday, with the family’s farm. He changed occupations early in life, however, because by the time he married in 1928, he lived in Baltimore, Maryland, and worked as a lithographer. He married Lucy Florence Strickler (1900-1991), a young woman born in Luray to Charles Amos and Martha Caroline Strickler. She was living in Woodstock when the couple married in Edinburg. The couple stayed in Maryland for the rest of their lives, raising two daughters, Dorothy C. and Elsie G. Golladay. They are buried together in Glen Burnie, a suburb of Baltimore. The name, "Carson Golliday", is written on the glass plate negative of this image. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
