Simon was the son of the founder of Wender’s Department Store in Woodstock, William M. Wender (1881-1932) and his wife, Minnie (Howard) Wender (1882-1961), both originally from Baltimore, Maryland. Simon was born in Pennsylvania. He grew up on N. Church Street in Woodstock with his sister, Lenora. When his father died, Simon and his sister were left in charge of the flagship store in Woodstock as well as another in Mount Jackson. The Wenders store was a well-known fixture in the area until they closed in the early 1970’s. The local newspapers published many short notices about Simon Wender’s involvement in the community. Simon married Rosella (Orndorff) Wender (1909-2003). She was born in Strasburg to Walter R. Orndorff and Effie Catherine Orndorff. Simon and Rosella had two children together, William M. and Deborah Jean Wender. Simon and his wife are buried in Beth El Cemetery in Harrisonburg, where they attended services. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Powell in his Army uniform with his sister, Violet L. (Powell) Bucklew, seated beside him. Herbert and Violet grew up in Fort Valley, two of at least eight children born to Kemper Clay (1896-1938) and Zola Eugenia (Munch) Powell (1900-1978). When Herbert turned 18 and registered for the WWII draft, his father had already died. Herbert was working for Harry Dinges in the St. David’s region of Fort Valley. He served in the U.S. Army from December 1943 to April 1946 and then re-enlisted for another tour from January 1948 to January 1949. He never married, lived in Luray, and was working as a cook for the U.S. Government when he died. He is buried in the Munch Family Cemetery in Fort Valley. Violet married Chester Emra Bucklew (1913-1988) in July 1948. Chester was born in Kirby, West Virginia, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Alice Virginia (Higgleman) Bucklew. He lived in Strasburg and was a jeweler. This was his second marriage and her first. They had at least one son together, Mark Wayne Bucklew (1952-2022). At some point, Violet and Chester moved to West Virginia where they are buried together in Rock Oak Cemetery, Baker, in Hardy County. A native of Kalesmenon, Greece, James was the proprietor of the New York Restaurant on Court Square in Woodstock, Virginia, from 1922-1947. He was known locally as “Jimmy the Greek”. We are unsure of the year that James first immigrated to the United States, but by August 1929, he had a U.S. passport indicating he was already a naturalized citizen. He made trips back to Greece when he could because his wife and children still lived there. His wife was Konstando (Ligdis) Kotsianas. She was the daughter of a Greek Orthodox Priest, Father George Ligdis. The couple’s two youngest sons, Theophanis (Frank) and John, were conceived during these home visits. James brought his oldest son, George, a 16-year old student, back to the United States with him in 1934. He had a daughter, Evanthia, as well. James first opened the restaurant in Woodstock in 1922 and it was located in the Locke building in its early days. Then, it was moved across the street and into the old Holtzman Hotel building where it remained and operated until it closed. In 1929, a partnership was formed between James Kotsianas, Pete Blentson (who may have been his cousin), George Pappas (who may have been related to Pete’s wife), and two other Greek men. The 1930 census in April found all five living together on Main Street and working as waiters in a restaurant. Over the years, James’s partners were bought out and by 1938, he and “Chef” Bentson were the sole proprietors of the popular restaurant. James returned to Greece shortly after the Italians invaded Greece in 1940. Local newspapers reported that he went back to fight for Greece and was captured there. We do not know much about his years there, but he was probably unable to return to the U.S. until after the war ended. During James’s absence, his son, George, remained in the U.S. and became a U.S. citizen and registered for the WWII draft during this time. After he graduated from Massanutten Military Academy (MMA), he continued to helped operate the New York Restaurant. James returned to the United States in 1946. When he arrived in New York, he brought his wife, “Konstante”, 19-year old son, “Theophanis”, and his youngest, 16-year old John. Their final destination was Knoxville, Tennessee, however, the family first went to Woodstock where his son, Frank, attended Massanutten Military Academy for at least a year. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028.
