(1904-1987) Description An account of the resource Massanutten Military Academy (MMA) cadet William A. MacDonough, shown in his school’s football uniform. William was from New York city and graduated from MMA in 1925. Prior to attending the school he was an actor on vaudeville. He was a member of the Poe debating society and his team not only won the 1925 annual debate, but William was awarded the gold medal for best overall debater that year. The resolution was: Resolved that the Government of the United States should officially recognize the Soviet Government of Russia. The Poe team successfully argued the positive side. William went on to attend Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia where he had earned a football scholarship. He married a popular Woodstock woman, Elizabeth “Betty” Newman (1909-1978), in New York City, on Christmas day, 1931. She was the granddaughter of Judge E.D. Newman and the daughter of Wilbur Lauck and Ruth (Koontz) Newman. When they married, Betty was a teacher of mathematics at Woodstock High School. Initially, the couple lived on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C. However, they moved many times – Detroit, Minneapolis, Duluth, Cinncinnati -- as William’s corporate career required. Over the years, he held management positions in General Mills, Coolerator Company, Bendix, and Avco Manufacturing. Later in his career he worked in advertising on Madison Avenue as Vice Chairman of Tatham-Laird Kudner. During their decades together, William and his wife raised two children, a daughter, Sarah Linda, and a younger son, John Newman MacDonough. Both William and his wife are buried in Woodstock. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Trilby was the daughter of Cecil E. and Winona Louise (Lantz) Hollar. She grew up in Lantz Mill. She was a majorette in High School and with the Lantz Mill Band. Her first husband was Martin Bernard Ketola whom she married in 1951. That marriage did not last. In 1955, she married Robert E. Daggett (1929-1996) but that marriage also ended in divorce. Emma was the daughter of James Marcellus and Daisy Viola (Copp) Boyer, a farming couple from rural Woodstock. The 1940 census found her married to Cecil Stultz (1915-2005) and living in the Johnston District of Shenandoah County with her parents. Cecil was the son of Otis Earl (1885-1969) and Ella Laura (Shipp) (1887-1971) Stultz. Ten years later, Emma and Cecil were still there with her parents but with two children, Carolyn (6 years old) and Stephen Dale (3 years old). The couple farmed all their lives. Both Emma and Cecil Stultz are buried in Maurertown.
