Clements and his wife, Sadie F. (Reid) Clements. The couple came to Woodstock in the mid-1920s. Houston was a barber and Sadie was a beautician. Sadie was born and grew up in Rockbridge County, Virginia. She was the fifth child (of at least ten) of Charles Morgan Reid, a farmer and cabinet maker, and Nannie Frances (Hostetter) Reid. As a girl, Sadie and her family lived in the small community of Buffalo for many years. She married Houston W. Clements, in 1916, in Lexington. He was originally from Collierstown, Rockbridge County, and the son of Houston and Mary M. (Entsminger) Clements. His father was from Glen Wilton and his mother was from Clifton Forge, Virginia. Early in their marriage, the couple moved to the Newport area of eastern Virginia where, in 1920, Houston worked as a machinist in a shipyard while Sadie looked after their young son, Charles Houston Clements (1917-1983). Sadie’s younger brother, Johnnie Reid, also lived with them. He was a painter in the ship yard. Both the 1930 and 1940 censuses listed the family as living on Court Street in Woodstock. “Hugh” was a barber with his own shop. By 1940, Sadie was a beautician with her own shop. After her husband died, Sadie continued to work as a hairdresser in Woodstock for many years. Her last years were spent in Salem, Virginia, where she died. Ralph (1921-1988) in 1946 and the couple shared 42 years together before he died. When she died, she was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse and Day Care Provider with 47 years of service. She left behind two daughters, Rebecca L. (Ralph) Shumate and Wanda A. (Ralph) Pantall. Both Naomi and Walter are buried in Walters Cemetery in Carmel, Fort Valley. Oswald Bentley Cooper, Sr., was born in Arlington County, the son of Joshua Allen and Georgia Ann (Rowe) Cooper. In 1930, he lived with his father and an older brother, Lloyd, on Glebe Road in Arlington. His father worked at the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing and owned his home. In November 1935, Oswald married Evelyn Pearl McAfee (1918-1973) in Woodstock. Oswald met his wife while he was at Camp George Washington, a CCC camp for African American men at Wolf Gap. When he married, he worked as a cook at the Massanutten Military Academy. His bride was from Woodstock and the daughter of Roy and Julia (Spinner) McAfee. Oswald and Evelyn started out their marriage in Washington D.C. and their oldest son was born there. By 1950, however, they lived on W. Spring Street in Woodstock and had five sons and a daughter. Three more children arrived after that. Oswald worked at the “Viscose Corp” which later became Avtex Fibers in Front Royal. He retired from there and lived in Edinburg when he died. Douglas and Philip E. McAfee were the youngest sons of Roy Wayland, Sr. (1891-1966) and Julia Margaret (Spinner) (1890-1963) McAfee, from Woodstock. They had 8 older siblings and one younger sister. They grew up on Water Street and their father worked at MMA. By 1940, the family owned the home they lived in. Philip E. was 18 years old when he registered for the WWII draft. He worked for Rust Engineers in Front Royal and was described as being 6’ tall and 165 pounds. He served in the Army as a Private. In 1950, Philip lived on Connecticut Avenue in Washington D.C., when he married Shirley Mae Burrill in September, a young woman from Luray. The couple had two sons together, Philip Edward McAfee, Jr., and Kenneth Roosevelt McAfee. At some point, they moved back to Woodstock and lived at 135 N. Water Street where Philip worked in a restaurant until he died. Douglas appeared in the 1950 census as living and working at the U.S. Naval Receiving Center in Washington D.C. His Naval service lasted from 1948-1952. He married Barbara Murray (1931-2007), who was from Washington, D.C. Her parents were Columbus, Jr. and Delia (Hawkins) Murray. The couple had at least one daughter, Yvonne. Nancy was born in Edinburg to Lloyd Amos (1907-1972) and Evaline Frances (Bowers) (1911-1994) Hutcheson. In 1940, the family lived in the Madison District of Shenandoah with Nancy’s great uncle, Wilbur A. Hutcheson. He was a retired farmer and Nancy’s father was working as a laborer for the State Roads Department. He earned $350 in 1939. Additional income from the farm was probably needed to sustain the family. In 1950, the family lived on a farm between Calvary Road and Narrow Passage Creek. Nancy married Jerry Franklin Hoffman (1932-2014) in Williamsport, Maryland, in October 1955. He was the son of Harry Cecil Hoffman. The marriage lasted about nine years before they divorced in November 1963. By then, they had a daughter. At the time of her divorce, Nancy lived in Woodstock where she did factory work for Remy, Inc. She stayed in Woodstock for the rest of her life. She was the daughter of Reuben and Nettie Catherine (Rudy) Kibler. Betty graduated from Woodstock High School in 1946 and attended Palmer Business School. She worked at the Agriculture Office for 6 years. Betty was married to Paul W. Cook of Woodstock for 62 years before she died. She left behind a son, Roger L. Cook, and three daughters: Brenda (Cook) Weaver, Judy (Cook) Hodson, and Barbara (Cook) Fadeley. Betty’s obituary, published in the Northern Virginia Daily newspaper on August 31, 2011, mentioned she was a member of St. Luke Brethren Church, where she served in various offices, was a Sunday School Teacher, and attended the Cedar Creek Christian Church. She ministered and assisted her husband and others with a ministry in music. She also enjoyed being a creative seamstress. Significant plate and emulsion damage is visible. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
