I’m not going to send any Christmas presents home because I have applied for a furlough starting Jan 4 and going to the 12 and I’ll bring them. You can either send me mine or wait until I get home to give it to me and by the way leave the tree up till I get there. I’m not sure I’ll get the furlough the 4th but I will get one either the first or last of Jan. If I get the furlough I have to have the price of a round trip ticket so please send me as near to $18 as you can but in being transferred and getting the furlough I miss two paydays and won’t get paid until Jan 20 and I need $12 to get home and back. I’ll explain in detail when I get home. I have been invited by the church in Kingston to a Christmas dinner and that’s another reason for the amount needed being $18 instead of $15 or twelve. I may send a telegram for the money so this letter will explain it and if it don’t I will when I get there & and I can pay you back the 20th. And I really need it. The people in the Church in Kingston really are swell and a lady gave my buddy and I a room free every time we come. {the girls are nice too HA} she and her husband had two fellows stay over weekends with them last year and she wants two that don’t drink and are nice again this year. My buddy’s name is Johnny Di Lavose [or Di Lavone] we sang in the choir after church on some special numbers and they think we’re pretty good. {By the way the quickest way to get money here is by telegram I’m broke Ha. The ladies at the USO in Kingston really like me because I complimented them on their fine work and they are getting me in with some of the nicest people in town. Buddy sent me a picture of his girl in Hollywood and I have seen her in movies once or twice. It’s certainly possible that Buddy met and took out a movie star. I have known several guys that spent weekend in Hollywood with the stars and their families. One of the guys in C. Co used to go to Alexia Smith’s home quite a lot. Do you remember the picture of me with the hula girl on my lap I had [taken] in L.A.? She was Johnnie Wisemuller’s girl (the guy that plays Tarzan) but I didn’t think that important. I have met some of the Stars of the male sex but never dated any of the opposite sex. I would rather be pursued than to pursue. Ha. I have met Bob Crosby (Bing’s brother), Betty Hutton, and Moss Hart the playwright who wrote The Man who Came to Dinner but I just haven’t been bragging about it. Toms Brook (Va) World War (1939-1945) Description An account of the resource A collection of images and letters associated with Joseph M. Hines. The vast majority are letters from his time serving with the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater during World War Two. Joseph Martin Hines was born in Toms Brook Virginia on December 1, 1923. His parents were Mary Thelma Borden and Duval “Du” Hines. Duval ran a general store in Toms Brook. Joseph Hines attended Toms Brook High School and graduated in 1941. He was a member of the school band, in which he played the clarinet, and of St. Peters Lutheran Church where he sand in the choir. In 1941 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He trained at Parris Island in South Carolina in 1942. Later that year he was transferred to San Diego and later Hawaii. In 1944 he was part of the invasion force that landed at Iwo Jima. After the war he lived in Arlington Virginia and married Ruby Beaver. He died in 1969. The box came finally but the cookies were buggy. The first bite was good and then I found the bugs. Ha. I heard from Sue and Jayne. Sue is sending a big picture soon. I think Jayne about half believed what I said. She sounded [sont] peeved but I don’t think her deceitful because she said very plainly to my face that she is not my girl. Ha. When I write her again I’ll tell her I’m really disappointed that she won’t be my girl and not to get excited, I won’t pop the question for a few years yet. Did you get the bond? I don’t remember if you said or not. Tell those silly young mothers they should stop acting like A—H--- and be glad they have husbands cause they say about 1 million girls will have to do without after the war. We fellows figure we are duty bound to marry one and keep about ten more happy, if not satisfied (gulp). And by the way a couple of them must have used ropes to get whatever they got (never having seen the [happ? Napp? hapless?] young fathers) because with their looks and personalities to my estimation they belong among the 1 million. Cacte (never could spell it) should be glad and proud she has a husband doing some real work instead of wearing brass and sitting at a desk full of pin ups like M Borden or sitting on his tail like numerous dogfaces I hear of. Who would take care of the people at home if all the young husbands and 4Fs were called? You know I’m blowing off a lot of steam and I really am serious. Tell the Smith Family what I said or read it to them. And you may also tell I get a letter from them occasionally but I don’t think all my mail is getting through. I’m doing MP duty on a gate now, don’t have to walk a post any more. It’s a lot better now and I have better duty. I don’t have to let them censor my mail any more. I guess they check a few some times. They say we have a chance of getting home sometime in the next 4 mo. The statements will do till I start home but I’ll need more when I do. When you send them put 45 cal pistol m 1911 US Gov. property #279642. It will have to have the serial no. and U.S. Gove prop. instead of Navy prop. The ones you sent will do while I’m here but send the others in a couple of weeks because you can never tell when they will send me home.
