Title A name given to the resource Commencement Program Subject The topic of the resource Strasburg High School (Va) Description An account of the resource On May 20, 1927 Strasburg High School’s seniors graduated during commencement exercises held at the Strand Theatre. This invitation was one of numerous cards ordered by the class’ 38 graduates. Originally the event seems to have been planned for June 3rd, but an insert notes the date was moved to May 20th. At the time, attending High School was a privilege and a sign of a family’s economic prosperity. Students had to pay tuition to continue their education beyond the seventh grade. Those who lived in the county also had to provide their own transportation. Only a few families had the means to provide these funds and to keep their children out of the workforce for four years. So these students would have been members of the town’s most prosperous families. Their diplomas would have provided a fast track into business, government jobs, local politics, and leadership positions. Over time this system would change, and the county began to provide free education through grade 12. Today a high school diploma is considered a right of all and a necessity for almost every job. The students from 1927 would have been pleasantly surprised. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
