Phillips (seated on the wicker chair) and his older sister, Ruby J. (Phillips) Rosenberger (standing) when they were children. They were the two oldest children of Charles Harry (1902-1972) and Florence Lorraine (Mumaw) (1904-1989) Phillips, of Mount Jackson. Two additional children, Eva M. and Joanne M. Phillips, were born to this couple after this photograph was taken. Douglas served during WWII as a Corporal in the U.S. Marines. After the war, he married Ruby Mae (Frye) in 1948. Together, they raised four children: Alicia A., Patricia L., Mary E., and Charles D. Phillips. The couple remained in the Mount Jackson area. Douglas worked for the U.S. Post Office for thirty years before he retired. Ruby Juanita Phillips married Richard Wayne Rosenberger in 1944. Richard was a metal worker and lived in Edinburg. His parents were Arthur Edgar and Annie May (Good) Rosenberger. At the time of their marriage, Ruby worked for the Blue Bell Company, however, the couple later moved to Charlottesville where they operated a successful prosthetic and orthotic business for 35 years. Her obituary appeared in the Daily Progress newspaper in Charlottesville and included a photograph of her in her later years. The name, "Phillips", is written on the glass plate negative of this image. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. The words reference the marriage of a German Missionary couple Eva Margagre Dahengerin and Friederict Hengerer. The communion set belonged to Peter Muhlenberg, a Revolutionary War era Lutheran/Anglican minister in Woodstock, Virginia. Following his departure from the area, the set was owned by Emanuel Lutheran Church in Woodstock until it was stolen from the church in the 1970s. It has not been recovered. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. "Billy" and Amanda (McInturff) Plauger Subject The topic of the resource Plauger, William "Billy" Erasmeth (1868-1943) Plauger, Amanda Leah McInturff (1867-1924) Description An account of the resource Photo of a photograph of William "Billy" Erasmeth Plauger, seated, and his wife, Amanda Leah (McInturff) Plauger standing beside him. Billy Plauger was from Fort Valley, one of three sons born to Joseph Franklin (1839-1931) and Catherine (Peters) (1839-1901) Plauger. His father was a teacher in Seven Fountains and when he died, the Roanoke Times newspaper reported that Billy’s father was the “last surviving eyewitness to the shooting of General “Stonewall” Jackson at the Battle of Chancellorsville”. In 1890, Billy Plauger married Amanda Leah McInturff, also from Fort Valley. She was the daughter of Jacob S. (1820-1883) and Leah (Veach) (1827-1905) McInturff. Together, Billy and Amanda farmed in the Seven Fountains area and raised five children: Ashby, Annie M., Charles, Minnie B. and George. In 1900, Amanda’s mother lived with them. Their farm was next to Billy’s parents and brother, George. At the time of his death, Billy’s occupation was listed as “Government Fire Warden”. On Amanda’s gravestone is carved: “She was the sunshine of our home”. Both are buried in the Plauger Cemetery in Detrick, Fort Valley.
