She was the daughter of Robert Johnston Benchoff, headmaster of Massanutten Military Academy, and Jean (Sine) Benchoff. She graduated from Central High School, Woodstock, Va., and received both a B.M. and an M.M. from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md. An image similar to these two was used in the 1967 Central High School yearbook because Gretchen, as a Senior, won the DAR Good Citizenship Award that year. From 1974-2002, Gretchen was on the college faculty, the preparatory faculty and was chair of the Music Theory Department at Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. From 1981-2005, she was employed by Dunbar Armored Inc., in Hunt Valley, Md., as vice president of Human Resources. At the end of her career, she worked part-time in a human resource capacity at Towson Pharmacy, Towson, Md. Gretchen never married and was buried in Woodstock, Virginia. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives.
