She killed the eagle with the H & R Shotgun in the photograph. Hugh Morrison, Jr. sent a copy of this photograph to H & R for an advertisement, but the co-president, Edwin Harrington, sent back a letter of refusal due to public sentiment growing in support of eagles. Mildred was from Woodstock, the daughter of David Samuel (1877-1952) and Lula Byrd (Hollingsworth) (1880-1966) Hottel. She grew up in the Johnston District of the county where her father farmed. She had a younger brother, Russel H. Hottel. Mildred married Heber Leon Wolverton (1893-1957) around 1929. The couple lived with her parents on their farm for most of their married lives. In the 1930 census, Heber was a carpenter working odd jobs. In 1940, Heber worked as an antiques dealer. In 1950, Heber worked at a fruit grader factory and Mildred worked as a clerk in a dry-cleaning plant. No children were listed. He had seen this photograph before and heard the story behind it. He also had the original letter from H & R Shotgun that was sent to Mildred. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
