Lewis McAfee was born in Shenandoah County to Arthur and Minnie McAfee. He grew up on Spring Street in Woodstock. His father was a barber and, in 1910, had his own shop. By 1920, however, his father had died. Lewis lived with his widowed mother and siblings and worked as a general laborer. Lewis married Elsie Pye in Woodstock in October 1926. She was 16 years old. He was a few years older and worked as a cook. They soon moved in with Elsie’s mother on High Street. In 1930, Lewis was a “cleaner” and had his own shop. Their oldest daughter, Francine, was there too. Sometime after 1935, Elsie and Lewis moved to Washington D.C. In the 1940 census, the couple had three young daughters. A lodger, Bernard Smith, was also there. When Lewis registered for the WWII draft in 1942, he and Elsie lived on 14th Street in D.C. Lewis was “Head Janitor” of the building they lived in. He was described as being 5’2” and 140 pounds. In the 1950 census, little had changed. Lewis died in Washington D.C., and was buried in Woodstock. Elsie died many years later in Washington D.C. Wesley was from Fort Valley, the son of George Morgan Ritenour, a farmer, and Sarah Frances McInturff. He married Isabel Inez Funk (1896-1978) when he was 21 years old. As newlyweds, they lived with Isabel’s parents, Robert E. Lee and Luella F. (Ritenour) Funk, on a farm in the Johnston District of Shenandoah County. Wesley was appointed Postmaster of Seven Fountains in 1927. When Wesley registered for the WWII draft, his occupation was at the “Standard Lime & Stone Co.” in Strasburg but his residence was still Fort Valley. Years later, the 1950, the census found them still in the Fort where Wesley farmed but also ran a general store. The couple had many children through the years including Mildred F., Margaret L., Hunter Lee, Robert M., Maynard, Wesley Jr., and George H. When he died, Wesley had already retired from farming. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs.
