Born in Shenandoah County, Edgar Newman was the son of Benjamin Pennybacker Newman and Elizabeth (Hickman) Newman. His father was in the business of iron manufacturing. Edgar grew up on his father's farm, tending to horses, sheep, and cattle. He was a 1876 graduate of Virginia Military Institute. In 1877, he began his career as an attorney in the office of Walton and Walton, lawyers in Woodstock. That same year, he married Miss. Mary Ott Walton. The couple had six children, Wilbur L., Edgar, Helen, Harold, Houston, and Douglas. From 1886 to 1898, he served as a judge of the County Court of Shenandoah County. He also served on the board of directors for Massanutten Military Academy at the time of their founding. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Title A name given to the resource Edinburg Fire Photograph Subject The topic of the resource Edinburg (Va) Description An account of the resource Fire has always been a threat to any town in America. Edinburg is not immune. This photograph shows the downtown area after it had been ravaged by a destructive fire in December of 1895. The conflagration destroyed six homes, the Edinburg Sentinel Office, a store, the Hotel Murray, two livery stables, a shoe shop, and 22 outbuildings. Other large fire occurred in 1906 which destroyed two stores and three houses. To protect themselves, the community organized a volunteer fire company. The first such organization was founded in 1869 and led by H.H. Riddleberger. This group was little more than an organized bucket brigade since Edinburg lacked a water works. Firemen at the time also specialized in “pulling down” buildings with hooks and axes to prevent the spread of fire. The fire company was reorganized 1903 after the Chief of the Washington DC fire department reviewed the town’s company and made recommendations to improve services. Based on his advice, the town purchased a chemical wagon, in essence a large fire extinguisher, and arranged for the company to use the Masonic Temple/town hall on Centre Street. The volunteers were also supplied with a hose cart to use water directly from the town’s new hydrant system once it was installed in 1907. A hook and ladder wagon was donated by druggist Frank Dinges in 1912 which greatly expanded the company’s ability to protect the town. The current Edinburg Volunteer Fire Company was organized in 1929. The first chief was Mark B. Getz and Ray Coffman served as President. It purchased a Packard touring car that year and modified it to serve as a fire engine. The company operated in the former town hall building until 1954 when it moved to a station on Main Street. In 1977 a new station was completed on Stoney Creek Blvd. where the company continues to operate from. Riddleberger was captain and Robert Ruby and Green Swann were lieutenants. The department consisted of only a bucket brigade because the city did not have a water system. According to accounts, the bucket brigade was largely ineffective to large fires. Around 1903, the Company received its first horse-drawn hook and ladder wagon, which was donated by druggist Frank Dinges, Sr. The wagon had ladders, axes, and chemical tanks. Title A name given to the resource Edinburg Hawk Patrol Subject The topic of the resource Edinburg (Va) Boy Scouts of America Description An account of the resource In 1941 five members of Edinburg Virginia’s Boy Scout Troop 54, called the “Hawk Patrol,” took this picture on the steel river bridge east of town during a scouting adventure. Pictured from left to right Douglas Hawkins, Frank Wilkins, William Davis, Stanley Getz, and Ernest Coffman. Scouting has been a popular past time in places like Edinburg for over 100 years. The town’s first Boy Scout troop was organized in 1912. Early activities were held at Narrow Passage and Luray. Over the decades the boys and their leaders would attend countless hikes, camps, regional assemblies, and special events like World Fairs and National Scout Jamborees. The troops have been sponsored by various organizations including the Methodist Church, the American Legion, and the Lions Club. Their efforts to support this organization have helped the various scout troops educate many local youth, including many that became prominent citizens and community leaders. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
