(Hoffman) Coffman as a young woman. Alese was the daughter of Harry Cecil (1902-1964) and Golda E. (Ritenour) (1904-1927) Hoffman. In the 1930 census, she lived with her parents and two brothers on Kibler Town Road in the Stonewall District of Shenandoah County. Her father was a farm laborer. Ten years later, Alese was a 16-year old high school student and lived as a “ward” of Joseph C. and Dora M. Laughlin in the Johnston District. She was the first wife of Linden Bower Coffman (1923-2008). Linden was a 1941 graduate of Woodstock High School. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he received the Purple Heart. During his life, he worked as a meat cutter for Tom Eagle's Slaughterhouse, clerked in the F&G Supermarket in Woodstock, and was a partner in the Woodstock Pool Hall. He retired from the Woodstock Post Office after 25 years of service. The couple had three children during their years together: Sandra S., Ronald Franklin, and Holly. Alese was also active in the Woodstock community. Northern Virginia Daily articles in the 1956-1963 timeframe mention her involvement in groups like the Woodstock Senior Home Demonstration Club and the Ladies Auxiliary of Shenandoah County. She died, relatively young, of breast cancer. The name, "Maud Funkhouser", is written on the glass plate negative of this image. Maude was one of at least seven children born to Isaac and Mary Susan (Shomo) Lindamood. Her father was a carpenter, born in Conicville. In the 1900 census, Maude was seventeen and worked as a housekeeper. She married an older widow in 1904. Benjamin F. Conner (1849-1926) was a farmer and had lost his wife the year before. Maude and Benjamin had two daughters together, Virginia C. and Annie M. They lived on Sperryville Pike outside New Market. Several years after Benjamin died, Maude married for the second time in 1938. James Monroe Funkhouser (1873-1961) had been a widow for five years when he married Maude. Born in Orkney Springs, his parents were David (1832-1906) and Susan (Barb) (1832-1900) Funkhouser. Maude is buried by herself in Saint Matthews Cemetery in New Market. Both of her husbands are buried with their first wives. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Ruth grew up on Main Street in Woodstock, the only child of Harry Alton (1908-1996) and Sudie Pearl (Foster) (1912-1990) Miller. In the 1940 census, her father worked in a pool hall. Ten years later, he was a presser in a coat factory. Ruth married Aubrey Harris Hough (born in Alabama) in 1957. She was a 22-year old Blue Bell employee and he was a 29-year old divorced telephone construction worker living in Edinburg. The marriage did not last. She married for the second time in 1969. Bobby Eugene Sorrells (1934-1996) was the son of Wallace Murry and Blanche Louise (Cherrix) Sorrells, from Edinburg. This was his third marriage. Bobby had served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956 and worked for the Virginia State Highway Department.
