Spessard, A.M. Description An account of the resource Photo of an oval framed portrait photograph of Clayton I. Spessard in a suit and tie with a high, starched collar. This is a photographic copy of an earlier Morrison Studio image. Clayton was born in Maryland, the son of Benjamin F. (1844-1910) and Catherine E. (Hartle) (1845-1902) Spessard. He had at least three sisters and a brother. He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1898, and taught Ancient Languages (Latin) and History at the Massanutten Academy in Woodstock when J. Silor Garrison was Headmaster, circa 1902. After, he taught for a couple of years at York High School in Pennsylvania. In 1906, Clayton moved to Idaho Springs, Colorado, (west of Denver) where he served as the Principal of the high school there. Later, he became a bank cashier at the Cedar Creek and Gilpin Trust Company of Idaho Springs, Colorado, until he retired. While in York, Clayton had met Bertha C. Palmer, a graduate of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. They were both were teaching at the York High School together. Her parents lived in Denver and they were married there in 1907. Clayton and his wife raised two sons, Frank P. and Clayton I. Spessard, Jr., both born in Colorado. Clayton spent the rest of his life in Colorado but died while visiting family in Maryland. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
