Rhodes was a 20-year old farmer in 1956 when he married 16-year old Betty Jean Cooley of Woodstock. Burks, posed together, when they were children. They were the only two children of Albert W. (1909-1945) and Estie Irene (Lentz) Burks (1918-2003) and grew up in Toms Brook. Their father died not long after this photograph was made. Both children appear in the 1940 and 1950 census for Toms Brook with their mother. They lived on the east side of Route 11. Gloria Dawn Burks eventually married Donald E. Mumaw and raised a family in Falls Church, Virginia. Larry settled in Midlothian, Virginia. He married Millie S. Burks and raised four children with her. When he died, his obituary in the Richmond Times Dispatch (9 Aug. 2005) noted he had worked for 32 years as a diesel mechanic for Great Coastal Trucking. Geneva worked as a bookkeeper in a poultry plant while Herbert worked as a printer’s helper in a printing plant. They had at least one son, Donald S. Cummins, who lived in Edinburg. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
