Title A name given to the resource Schmitt's Drug Store Subject The topic of the resource Schmitt's Drug Store (Woodstock Va) Description An account of the resource This photograph of bicycles for sale at the Schmitt Drugstore in Woodstock was taken sometime in the late 19th century. Around that time the country was experiencing a “bicycle craze.” This new form of transportation was popular among the members of the nation’s middle and elite classes. Schmidt’s drug store would have taken advantage of the phenomena. Founded in 1834 by Dr. John G. Schmitt, a Swiss immigrant, the institution not only produced prescriptions, it also sold a variety of general merchandise items and operated a soda fountain. The store, located on Main Street, was one of the most popular in Woodstock, their eatery became a social attraction, and the Schmitts became community leaders. They were also an authorized Columbia Bicycle dealer. Pictured here is the company’s model 1879 high wheeler. Schmitt’s decision to carry and display such a large number in front of their store means it must have been very popular locally. In 1885 a new drug store building was built on the same site as the old store on Main Street. In this picture we can see the front steps of that new building. This fact, coupled with popular demand for, and Columbia’s release of a new “safety” bicycle with two equal size wheels in 1890, indicates the picture was taken between 1885 and 1890. Schmitt’s drug store would continue to operate through the mid part of the 20th century. In 1944 it was purchased by long time employee Joseph B. Clower who managed operations until 1956 when the business was sold to its local competitor Walton and Smoot who closed the drug store. The building would be sold again in the 1980s and in the early 2000s. It has been recently remodeled and now houses a branch of the First Bank and Trust Company and the All things Virginia store at the Farmhouse. Jackson Va) Mt. Jackson (Va) Description An account of the resource Throughout the 20th century, one of Mt. Jackson’s most prominent commercial establishments was Triplett and Vehrencamp, a farm supply and hardware business. Located on Main Street, near the current town hall, this organization occupied a sprawling warehouse complex. This business had originally been founded by Dr. J.I. Triplett, a prominent local businessman, who was also responsible for founding Mt. Jackson National Bank and for operating the Mt. Jackson Mill. He had purchased a series of grain elevators on the site from S.P. Lonas in 1915 and expanded the business to include hardware and farm equipment. Later it became known as Triplett and Coffman, and finally as Triplett and Vehrencamp. The firm dealt in general merchandise, housewares, hardware, building materials, gasoline, and Goodyear Tires. In 1930 Triplett died and the business was purchased by the Vehrencamp family who had already been partners in the store. Twenty-five years later they moved the business to the Rinker Brother’s Filling Station, originally the Mt. Jackson Graded and High School on the north end of town. At the same time, they began selling John Deere Tractors. They ceased their heavy machinery business in 1965 but continued to serve as the community’s central repair center and sell appliances, mowers, hardware, and farm supplies until the late 20th century. Jackson (Va) Description An account of the resource In 1955 Triplett and Vehrencamp closed their downtown store and reopened under the name Vehrencamp's on the north end of town. Their Grand Opening celebration can be seen in this photograph. This new structure had been operating as the Rinker Brother's Filling Station but originally had been the Mt. Jackson Graded and High School. The new business sold John Deere, and later Oliver Tractors, other farm supplies, hardware, and much more. In 1965 Bill Vehrencamp, the business's owner died. His wife continued operations but ceased the sale of heavy machinery. Strasburg Junction (Va) Lichliter Family Description An account of the resource On June 1, 1915 J.R. Selz, of the Chicago-based Selz, Schwab & Co., sent this letter to Pauline Lichliter of Strasburg Virginia, notifying her that she had been awarded the coveted Morris Selz Liberty Bell Medal. Named for the Selz Company’s founder, Morris Selz, this award was given to students across the country who obtained the highest averages in their schools in specific subjects. While we are not sure what subject Pauline excelled in, her later career in newspapers, indicates it may have been in English. The Selz Company, founded in 1871, was a major shoe manufacturer and distribute in the mid-west. It would operate until 1929 when it closed as a result of the Great Depression. Pauline Lichliter would go on to have a distinguished career working for the Keister family and the Northern Virginia Daily, and later at the Presbyterian Church’s General Assembly Training School in Richmond, and various other educational organizations in the state. She died in Strasburg in 1972. Today her papers, and those of her family, are housed in the Truban Archives. They include hundreds of letters, photographs, postcards, and railroad items owned by her father who managed the Strasburg Junction for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Title A name given to the resource Woodstock Railroad Accident Subject The topic of the resource Woodstock (Va) Railroad Description An account of the resource This photograph most likely shows a locomotive of the B&O Railroad that had been involved in a wreck in Woodstock Virginia. Local reports indicate that the wreck occurred on August 27, 1892. A northbound train, pulled by engine Number 199, a “camel type” locomotive that dated to before the Civil War. Sometime during the late 19th century Engine Number 199 came under the direction of John T.A. “Red” Deck. He would be operating the locomotive as it left Harrisonburg around 10:00AM on that August morning pulling 16 cars. As he entered Woodstock and rounded the curve near what is now Benchoff Drive, he spotted the aptly named cow “Bossy” astride the tracks. Red’s attempts to frighten the cow with his whistle failed and he ordered his brakeman, atop the cars, to begin applying the brakes. However, they were unable to stop in time and the locomotive struck the cow and was thrown from the tracks. The engine and cars plowed down the bank near Spring Hollow Creek and came to rest in a pile of splintered wood and metal. Several members of the train crew survived. Red Deck was able to save himself by jumping as the train left the tracks and then by outrunning it. Head brakeman Frank Laughlin, riding atop the cars, jumped down the opposite embankment and was dazed but uninjured. Conductor W.M. Swain not only was able to jump from his car, but he also grabbed his signal flag and ran south to stop an oncoming passenger train before it reached the wreck. J.W. Fisher, the rear brakeman, and passenger R.E. Stoneburner of Edinburg, were in the caboose when the wreck happen also escaped by jumping and helped extinguish the fire in the locomotive so an explosion did not occur. The only fatality was the fireman, Lemuel Wine who was crushed by the engine. It took several hours to recover his body which was sent to Fravel and Feller’s funeral home in Woodstock. They did what they could to repair the body and sent it south to Harrisonburg around 10:00PM. He left behind a wife and one child. On the day of the incident, the annual Fisher’s Hill Confederate Veterans Reunion was being held. The railroad hastened to clean up the accident to ensure special trains filled with veterans were able to reach the site. A few hours after the crash, the line was once again reopened. Hundreds of locals, and visiting veterans, flocked to the site over the next several days to see the destruction. In this photograph we can see these spectators, and numerous workers alongside the destroyed engine, which had been moved onto hastily laid track beside the main line before its removal. Eventually the picture ended up in the hands of William F. Lichliter, a B&O manager at the Strasburg Junction during this period. Title A name given to the resource Shenandoah County Automobile Association Subject The topic of the resource Shenandoah County Automobile Association (Va) Shenandoah County (Va) Automobiles-Virginia-Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource Sometime in the early 20th century, a group of automobile owners met in Toms Brook Virginia and organized the Shenandoah County Automobile Association. According to this printed copy of their constitution and bylaws, the purpose of the organization was to provide assistance to the county’s car owners and to advocate for the improvement of roads in the area. Based on the recommendations their executive committee approved in February of 1917, there was concern with how the road taxes were collected and distributed. They also advocated for a change in the way the roads were maintained. During the 18th and 19th century, individuals were appointed in each of the county’s magisterial districts to oversee road work. These individuals usually appointed for political reasons, drafted workers to maintain roads. Since most people travelled on foot or by horse, little roadwork was needed and most of the time these unqualified individuals were able to keep the roads open. However, once cars appeared and transportation changed, better roads were needed and qualified individuals had to be recruited to build them. The effort of the association to recruit such a superintendent was in line with this objective. Apart from the information contained in this publication, we know almost nothing about this Association or its operations. However we do know that similar organizations like it existed throughout the country during this time period. This so called “Good Roads Movement” promoted improved highways across the country from the late 19th century through the 1920s. National, state, and local organizations organized to meet this goal. In Virginia they were highly successful and numerous road building projects, both in Shenandoah County and statewide, were passed during the 1910s and 1920s. The decision of the state to assume responsibility for all roads, and the creation of the state highway department in the 1930s was the paramount accomplishment of this effort. Title A name given to the resource Citizens Bank of New Market "Bank of Thrift" Subject The topic of the resource Citizens Bank of New Market (Va) Description An account of the resource This coin bank was produced in the mid-1920s by the Banker’s Thrift Corporation. The company was known for their production of novelty coin banks. They, and their subsidiaries, were acquired by the Banthrico Corporation in 1931. The new company, which operated until the 1960s, called themselves “The Coin Bank People.” Banker’s Thrift’s most popular model during that period was the “book” bank. It was designed to look like a book and could be designed for the custom needs of each buyer. Banks often purchased these and distributed them to customers to promote savings, especially during the 1920s when most patrons were enjoying the post-war desire to focus on enjoying the present instead of preparing for the future. To ensure the saved money reached the bank, keys were not included. Instead customers would bring the coin bank to their financial institution who would open it and deposit the funds inside. This specific coin bank was made for the Citizens National Bank of New Market. The institution was organized in 1897 by a group of local business men led by S.R. Hoover, C.W. Bennick, M.B. Wunder, and E.D. Newman. In 1914 the bank had over $25,000 of capital (over $500,000) today. That year it became a National Bank which meant it was allowed to print its own bank notes, and was regulated by the Federal Government. A second National Bank, the First National Bank of New Market, also operated in town with the same amount of capital. Apart from these facts, very little is known about this particular bank. It operated through the 1920s and the Great Depression but, apart from this coin bank, almost no records exist to detail its history. Title A name given to the resource Edinburg Fire Photograph Subject The topic of the resource Edinburg (Va) Description An account of the resource Fire has always been a threat to any town in America. Edinburg is not immune. This photograph shows the downtown area after it had been ravaged by a destructive fire in December of 1895. The conflagration destroyed six homes, the Edinburg Sentinel Office, a store, the Hotel Murray, two livery stables, a shoe shop, and 22 outbuildings. Other large fire occurred in 1906 which destroyed two stores and three houses. To protect themselves, the community organized a volunteer fire company. The first such organization was founded in 1869 and led by H.H. Riddleberger. This group was little more than an organized bucket brigade since Edinburg lacked a water works. Firemen at the time also specialized in “pulling down” buildings with hooks and axes to prevent the spread of fire. The fire company was reorganized 1903 after the Chief of the Washington DC fire department reviewed the town’s company and made recommendations to improve services. Based on his advice, the town purchased a chemical wagon, in essence a large fire extinguisher, and arranged for the company to use the Masonic Temple/town hall on Centre Street. The volunteers were also supplied with a hose cart to use water directly from the town’s new hydrant system once it was installed in 1907. A hook and ladder wagon was donated by druggist Frank Dinges in 1912 which greatly expanded the company’s ability to protect the town. The current Edinburg Volunteer Fire Company was organized in 1929. The first chief was Mark B. Getz and Ray Coffman served as President. It purchased a Packard touring car that year and modified it to serve as a fire engine. The company operated in the former town hall building until 1954 when it moved to a station on Main Street. In 1977 a new station was completed on Stoney Creek Blvd. where the company continues to operate from. Title A name given to the resource "Victory Potato is Grown at Pythian Home" Subject The topic of the resource New Market (Va) Hines Memorial Home (New Market Va) Second World War (1939-1945) Description An account of the resource This newspaper article appeared in the Daily News-Record on July 17, 1942. During that time period, residents of Shenandoah County were fully mobilized to help fight the Second World War. On the Home Front individuals worked in war plants, harvested crops for soldiers, rationed their use of materials, and grew “Victory Gardens” to help reduce the amount of food they had to purchase. While digging in one such garden at the Hines Memorial Pythian Home in New Market, Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Rice discovered a potato imprinted with a “V.” To them, and members of the community, this fact indicated future success for the armed forces of the United States and the local service members serving their country. At the time, any hope of victory was badly needed. In the eight months since the country had entered the war, almost all the news had been bad. The nation’s first real victory, at the Battle of Midway, occurred only a month before this article appeared. Everyone who read this news knew the outcome of the conflict was still very much in doubt. Like today, anything that even hinted at a better way forward, including a “Victory Potato” would have been extremely important for morale. The Hines Memorial Home where the potato was found was a New Market institution for many decades. It was founded in 1927 by the Knights of the Pythias, a national fraternal organization. The home was operated by the statewide Pythian organization and was designed to be a home for the elderly, widows, and orphans associated with the organization. In a time before modern welfare services, homes such as this often provided the best type of care for less-fortunate individuals. Hines Memorial’s site consisted of a large, colonial style building, over 50 acres of land, and a playground for children. A WPA report in 1937 noted sixteen orphans and one adult lived in the home. After World War Two the Pythians moved Hines Memorial Home to Bedford County Virginia. The site in New Market then became the local depot of the Mason-Dixon Trucking Company. Today the structure houses an assisted living facility called the Shenandoah Valley Village. Title A name given to the resource Ford and Cooley Dairy Bottle Cap Subject The topic of the resource Dairy Woodstock (Va) Description An account of the resource This picture shows a paper milk-bottle cap produced by Woodstock Virginia’s Ford-Cooley Dairy. The dairy was located just south of Woodstock near Narrow Passage. It operated from sometime in the 1930s until around 1960. It would have been used to seal glass milk bottles. These bottles were used to store milk throughout most of the 20th century. Once the milk had been consumed, the bottles would have been returned to the milk producer. Individuals could have purchased their milk at local stores, but most likely they would have had their milk delivered to their house via he local milkman. Many larger dairies offered this service until the late 20th century. Production of the milk that went into these bottles, and other dairy products has been a regular part of Shenandoah County’s economy since cattle were introduced to the United States in the 18th century. Local farmers would have kept milk cows and used their milk, plus the cheese, butter, and cream produced from it, for their family’s personal use. A few entrepreneurs created larger operations to support commercial cheese manufacturing during the middle of the 19th century. One notable cheese factory existed in the Forrestville community. However none of these developed into large scale enterprises or supported a drastic increase in the county’s dairy production. Technological changes occurring at the turn of the 20th century changed this. For the first time milk, and other perishable products could be transported long distances via refrigerated rail cars. Valley farmers began to increase their production of milk and sell the surplus to residents of Washington DC who did not own their own cows. Soon after this farms that raised only milk cows and commercial dairies designed to process this resource emerged. The largest in the area was Valley of Virginia Cooperative Milk Producers Association which was formed in 1926. It produced Shenandoah’s Pride Dairy products until it was sold in 2000. Several other operations, including the Southern Dairy in Woodstock, also operated during the middle part of the 20th century. Today dairy production is conducted by larger, national corporations several of which operate plants in nearby Frederick and Rockingham Counties. Today dairy production continues to be a major part of the county, and the Valley’s economy. Recent reports estimate there are over 1,800 milk cows in Shenandoah County and list the Valley as the state’s top milk producer. Jackson (Va) Description An account of the resource This aerial photograph of the Town of Mt. Jackson Virginia shows a community much different than the one we know today. The most prominent difference is the layout of the town. While the downtown district may look the same, the areas beyond that have changed drastically. Many of the smaller homes and farm fields that are seen here have been replaced by subdivisions needed to house a larger population. The large commercial establishments on the north end of town and the growth in that direction are also absent as Interstate 81 had not yet been built. Transportation arteries have also been altered. Orkney Drive, pictured in the foreground, was once the main road between Mt. Jackson and Orkney Springs. It has since been relegated to a side street since being replaced by Orkney Grade which enters on the south end of town. The rail line, which has been mostly abandoned, was still in use as shown by the presence of railcars in the center of the picture. Many of the buildings that are pictured here have also changed use, been altered, or demolished. • The Triplett School, which once housed the community’s High, Elementary, Middle, and Vocational Schools, sits on the south end of town. Its north wing was demolished for the town’s fire department which moved from its original quarters shown on the north end of town. The building has been vacant since the company moved further south in 2016. • Additions have been completed at both the Lutheran Church and Methodist Churches, pictured prominently in the foreground. • The Nelson Theatre, in the center of town, has been closed and the building now houses other commercial establishments. • The farm bureau building, in the foreground, and the Triplett and Verhencamp Building, on the north end of Main Street were centers of the area’s farming community when the picture was taken. The farm bureau building now houses a flea market and the Verhencamp Building has been demolished. • The Triplett Building, which housed People’s National Bank and has since been demolished for a parking lot, sits prominently on the north end of Main Street.
