Hugh Saum and Company was founded in 1868 by two brothers, John A. and Hugh, whose father, Abraham, had a store prior to this time. The site of the first store was on the corner of Comer and Main Streets in Edinburg. The last location was on the Main Street next to the Dominion Bank (First Union) parking lot. For many years, Hugh Saum & Co. was known as the oldest hardware store east of the Mississippi River that had been in business continuously and owned by the same family. "They've got it if they can find it" was their company's well-known advertising pitch. The store was sold to the telephone company after the death of John and Kenneth Saum in the 1980's. The building was then torn down and replaced by business offices for the telephone company.
