The Maryland Company began in the 1920's and, expanded to include plants in Woodstock, Mount Jackson, Shenandoah, Luray, and Elkton. The plants produced denim overalls and provided steady employment to hundreds of locals, including women who had previously been excluded from many industrial jobs. In the 1940's, Casey Jones was purchased by Blue Bell Inc., who later introduced Wrangler Jeans. They continued to operate the plant on E. Court St. until 1956 when a new factory opened on the south end of town. Over the next several decades this building would be a realty office and retail shop. In the 1980s and 1990s it was home to a radio station and Channel 10 TV which covered Woodstock area news. Today, it is home to the Woodstock Brew House. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Solon Subject The topic of the resource Natural Chimneys Regional Park Description An account of the resource Photograph of Natural Chimneys, a natural rock structure located near Mt. Solon in Augusta County, Virginia. Unidentified people are seen on the right and an unidentified woman and man on horseback are seen at the base of one of the chimneys. The formation is a central feature of a regional park owned and operated by Augusta County. The formation includes seven rock "chimneys" that range in height from 65 to 120 feet (20 to 37 m) above ground level. The chimneys are formed from limestone that began to accumulate and harden into stone about 500 million years ago in the Paleozoic Era, when the region was underwater. Over time, enormous upward pressures of magma and widespread geologic upheaval, which created the Appalachian Mountains, combined with erosive forces of water and destroyed weaker layers of stone. Eventually, this created the rock chimneys which can be seen today.
