Infantry Division, 29th Soldiers-Virginia-Maurertown Description An account of the resource Photograph of John Myers from the book "Service Record World War I and II, Woodstock and Vicinity." John A. Myers (1896-1969) worked on his father’s farm in Maurertown VA when he volunteered for the National Guard in June 1917. Part of the 29th Infantry Division, he went to France in June of 1918 and entered combat on July 16 1918. Serving in the Meuse-Argonne sector, Myers was wounded and gassed on October 8 1918. Discharged in February of 1919, he returned to his father’s farm. Crabill Subject The topic of the resource Crabill, Ralph World War (1914-1918) Soldier Description An account of the resource Photograph of Ralph Crabill from the book "Service Record World War I and II, Woodstock and Vicinity." Ralph B. Crabill (1895-1963) was employed as a jeweler in Strasburg when he was drafted on October 4 1917. He deployed to France on June 7 1918 as part of the 80th Infantry Division. Ralph saw conflict in the Picardy Sector in July 1918, the St. Mihel Offensive in September 1918, and the Muese Argonne Offensive from September-November 1918. During the course of the war he rose from the rank of Private to Sergeant. He was discharged on June 7 1919 and returned to his position as a jeweler in Strasburg. On his postwar service survey he left no comment on how he viewed the war or how it affected him. Title A name given to the resource Peach Seed Shipment at the Woodstock Depot Subject The topic of the resource World War, 1914-1918 Woodstock (Va) Description An account of the resource In 1915 the German Army released the effective Chlorine gas attack of World War One against British positions in Ypres. Before the end of the war these types of Chemical agents would kill or injure millions of men on both sides. To combat these poisons a gas mask was developed that utilized charcoal to filter incoming air. One of the most effective sources of the charcoal needed came from peach seeds. After entering the war in 1917 the US government launched a massive drive to collect peach pits for its soldier’s masks. This photograph shows the results of one such drive in Shenandoah County. Local boy scouts and citizens pose at the Woodstock depot with a large shipment of peach pits obtained through the Chapin-Sacks Company. The scouts and those who helped them appear to be proud of the large amount of life saving materials they were providing. Collections of these materials, and other types of drives, would continue in the county throughout WWI. Most of these items, and many others would be shipped from the railroad depot which served the community until it was demolished in the 1950s. Chapin-Sacks, which produced ice and refrigerated products such as peaches, would be purchased by the Southern Dairy in the 1920s. Production ceased there in the 1970s and the North Street site became the Town of Woodstock’s Public Works facility. Today, it is abandoned.
