He is best remembered for the many years he and his parents operated the silk mill in Strasburg. Nathan Platt was born in Manhattan on May 17, 1915 to Charles and Rosa (Berliner) Platt, recent immigrants from Poland/Russia. The family was Jewish and spoke Hebrew at home. Both the 1920 and 1930 censuses recorded the family living in Paterson, New Jersey, where Nate’s parents worked as weavers in a silk mill. Nate was a teenager before he left there. By 1940, the family had been living on Massanutten Street in Strasburg for at least the previous five years. Nate was 25 years old and attending NC State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. His father was the proprietor of a silk mill in Strasburg. By then, both of Nate’s parents were naturalized citizens and owned their home. Nate enlisted in the U.S. Army in December 1942. He was part of the Army's 29th Infantry Division, nicknamed the Blue and Grey Division. He served for three years and was discharged. After the war, he married Adele Lober and together, they had a son, Steven Irving Platt, born in 1947, who later became a lawyer in Maryland. Nate took over the ownership and management of the silk mill from his father. The silk mill employed many people in the Strasburg area during the decades it operated. The building still stands today and is the home of Strasburg’s Antiques Emporium at the intersection of Massanutten and King Streets. When she was quite young, the family lived in the Forks District of Warren County where her father rented a farm. Mamie married Gilbert Martin Barbe (1909-1969), a WWII veteran and the son of M.W. and Lillie (Hammond) Barbe. He was the son of Charles Edwin and Fannie (Coffelt) Hollingsworth and had a long career in high school level education; first as a teacher, later as a Principal. Milton married Sylvia Pierce, a young woman born in England. Together, they had two daughters, Patricia and Sylvia. He started out as a teacher at the Edinburg High School and by 1930, the census listed him living in Woodstock where he worked as the principal of the high school. Ten years later, he was a high school principal in Bedford County. When he died, Milton Hollingsworth was a retired Principal of Norfolk City Schools still living in Norfolk. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Bill was born in Edinburg, son of Mark B. and Hattie V. (Branner) Getz. He was a 1939 graduate of Edinburg High School and received his Bachelor's Degree in Business from Strayer University. He married Florine Wisman (Fravel) Getz (1923-2007) in 1944. She was from Woodstock, the daughter of Nevin Kline and Lula M. (Wisman) Fravel. Bill served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. After, he was secretary and treasurer of Shenandoah Mutual Fire Insurance Company until he retired in 1987. He continued as Chairman of the Board until 2009. Always active in his community, Bill was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Edinburg, a life member of Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department, a member of Woodstock American Legion Post #199 and the International Order of Oddfellows Lodge #82.
