Lucy was born in Alonzaville to Milton Franklin (1849-1930) and Martha Alice (Richard) (1856-1943) Vetter. She married William Harrison Day (1891-1969) in July 1915 in Woodstock. Their first child was born in Hardy County, West Virginia, a couple of years later. Sometime after, the family moved to Arlington where they spent the rest of their lives. In both the 1920 and 1930 censuses, Lucy’s husband worked as a truck driver for the Carry ice cream factory. They raised their four children – Claribel, Jean, Douglas, and Howard L. -- in Arlington. By 1940, William worked as a janitor for Arlington Public Schools. When he died, his death record noted he was a painting contractor. Lucy remained in Arlington after her husband’s death. Both are buried in Columbia Gardens Cemetery, Arlington. Gochenour Description An account of the resource Photograph of two brothers, Clarence Henry Gochenour (seated) and Elmer Samuel Gochenour (standing). Clarence and Elmer were two of many children born to Henry David (1861-1924) and Mary Ellen “Mollie” (Stultz) (1864-1927) Gochenour. In both the 1900 and 1910 censuses, the brothers were attending school and helping out on the family farm near Woodstock. Elmer S. Gochenour was single and working as a farmhand for R.M. Sager when he registered for the WWI draft. He served in the U.S. Army as a PFC in Company B of the 126th Engineers. He was stationed in France from October 1917 to August 1918. After the war, Elmer lived in Washington D.C. for a few years. The 1920 census found him lodging with a couple and working in a dry goods store. By the mid-1930’s, he had moved to Florida. The 1950 census found him living in Broward County where he co-owned and co-managed a fruit and vegetable business with his partner, Christine Howard. He never married and was living in Paulding, Georgia, when he died. Clarence H. Gochenour worked as a farmhand when he registered for the WWI draft in June 1917. He did not serve in the military. Instead, he remained on his family’s farm until his unexpected death due to pneumonia and bronchitis a few years later. Clarence was just 28 years old when he died. Rena was born in rural Woodstock to William Kirby (1864-1925) and Laura Frances (Wilkins) (1867-1941) Barr, a farming couple. She lost her father as a teenager and in both the 1930 and 1940 censuses, she and her widowed mother lived with her older sister, Myrtle, and her husband, Clarke W. Kibler, on a farm along Route 11 in the Stonewall District of Shenandoah County. For many years, she worked as a secretary for Philip Williams, a Shenandoah County Attorney and Commonwealth’s Attorney in Woodstock. She moved to Washington D.C. at some point in the 1940’s and by 1950, she was working as a secretary for a congressional office and living on C St. SE. A Northern Virginia Daily newspaper article from January 1956 noted she had worked for Congressman A. Willis Robertson and later, Congressman Burr P. Harrison. Rena was already in her forties when she married in 1953. A detailed article in the Northern Virginia Daily (on 7 July 1953, page 4) described the event: “Of wide interest, not only in Woodstock and Shenandoah County, but also among Democratic political circles in Washington D.C.” Her husband was William Harrison Botkin, Jr. (1920-1966), a travelling salesman for Emerson Television Company in Huntington, West Virginia. Not long after, they moved to Woodstock. Rena was selected to be one of two deputies for Jesse D. Funkhouser, then a Shenandoah County Treasurer. Many other Northern Virginia Articles chronicle her community involvement over the course of her years in Woodstock. The couple did not have children and Rena’s death certificate notes she was divorced and living in Woodstock when she died. At the time of her death, she worked as a secretary in a nursing home. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
